11 years after it first hit theaters, Tom Hardy’s Oscar-winning Western masterpiece is finally coming back to theaters. 20th Century Fox has announced that The Revenant, also starring Leonardo DiCaprio, will return to theaters from February 26 to March 1 to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary, which passed last year. The only caveat is that The Revenant will only play on select IMAX screens, which will certainly limit the number of theaters that can show the film. It’s always possible that more showings could be added after, but this will depend on how it performs during its initial run.
The Revenant made history at the 2016 Academy Awards for a few reasons. Most notably, it was the first film to finally earn Leonardo DiCaprio his first win for Best Lead Actor, and it’s still the only win he holds to this day. Many fans feel strongly that DiCaprio should have won for both The Wolf of Wall Street and Blood Diamond, but he finally won the Award that had been evading him in 2016. The Revenant also lives on as the only movie that ever earned Tom Hardy a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Mark Rylance ultimately won the award for Bridge of Spies.
The Revenant earned strong scores of 78% from critics and 84% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it even grossed $532 million at the box office during its initial run back in 2016. It will look to add to this when it arrives back in theaters next month. Alejandro G. Iñárittu directed the film, and he even won an Oscar alongside DiCaprio for Best Director. The Revenant also took home the Oscar for Best Cinematography, which went to Emmanuel Lubezki.
What Is Tom Hardy’s Highest-Grossing Movie?
The highest-grossing movie of Tom Hardy’s career is The Dark Knight Rises, and it’s the only one of Hardy’s films to eclipse $1 billion at the global box office. Hardy also has all three Venom movies to hang his hat on, the first of which grossed over $800 million at the worldwide box office against a relatively modest $100 million budget. Hardy’s work with director Christopher Nolan has proved to be fruitful, as Inception is also one of his highest-grossing movies, with over $800 million. The Revenant is the fourth-highest-grossing movie of Hardy’s career.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of The Revenant leading up to its return to theaters.
