February is going to be a great month for the folks still shipping ex-spouses Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, whose movies are incidentally going to be released on the same streaming platform, and that, too, on the very same day. Lopez and Affleck were married from 2022 to 2025, after having rekindled their relationship following a widely publicized engagement in the early 2000s. It was when they were first together that they collaborated as actors on the movies Gigli and Jersey Girl, both of which flopped at the box office. Gigli is infamous in certain circles, and has developed a reputation as one of the worst films ever made. It was during their marriage, however, that they worked together, albeit in a different capacity, on the musical film Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Directed by Bill Condon, Kiss of the Spider Woman featured Lopez along with Andor: A Star Wars Story star Diego Luna and Tonatiuh Elizarraraz. The movie was co-produced by Affleck and Matt Damon through their company, Artists Equity, and will be released on Hulu along with the decade-old action film The Accountant. Starring Affleck, The Accountant made over $155 million at the global box office in 2016, against a reported budget of $44 million. It went on to become a home video favorite, which prompted the release of a sequel, The Accountant 2, last year. Directed by Gavin O'Connor, The Accountant received mixed reviews, and is now sitting at a 53% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "The Accountant writes off a committed performance from Ben Affleck, leaving viewers with a scattershot action thriller beset by an array of ill-advised deductions."
Jennifer Lopez Received Positive Reviews for Her Performance in 'Kiss of the Spider Woman'
Last year's sequel earned better reviews, and grossed a little more than $100 million globally. Kiss of the Spider Woman, on the other hand, tanked at the box office, grossing just $2 million against a reported $30 million budget. It did, however, earn mostly positive reviews. The movie is currently sitting at a "certified fresh" 77% score on RT, where the consensus reads, "Weaving a visually sumptuous web of musical intrigue, Kiss of the Spider Woman showcases beauty in tragedy through wondrous performances by Jennifer Lopez, Tonatiuh Elizarraraz and Diego Luna." You can watch both films on Hulu starting February 27, and in the meantime, you can check out Affleck and Damon's new action film, The Rip, on Netflix.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
