There are dozens of great movies on Prime Video to watch this week, but some stand head and shoulders above the rest. One of the earliest adopters of the streaming model, Amazon's Prime Video quickly muscled in against competition like Netflix. With its massive catalog, Prime Video set itself apart by having almost anything at the touch of a button.
Besides offering seemingly unlimited content from years past, Prime Video has also begun producing their own movies and TV shows. With so much to choose from, it can often become quite difficult to decide what to watch. Thankfully, a few films on Prime Video are so good that they deserve to take precedence over anything else on the platform.
3 Overlord (2018)
Movies that have the ability to surprise are always in short supply, and Overlord certainly fits in that category. During WWII, American paratroopers drop behind enemy lines, only to find themselves face-to-face with an army of undead zombies. Action horror films often struggle to embrace both of their genres, but Overlord is perfectly balanced.
The war action is exciting, and it sets the stage for what follows in the second half. Once the zombies show up, the movie kicks into high gear, and becomes a totally bonkers experience. Not too scary, Overlord is the sort of genre-bending flick that hearkens back to the golden age of B-movies. However, it improves upon the age-old formula.
2 About A Boy (2002)
From author Nick Hornby (who also wrote High Fidelity), About a Boy is one of those unforgettable Aughts gems that's endlessly rewatchable. An irresponsible bachelor in his 30s strikes up an unorthodox friendship with a 12-year-old boy, and they teach each other lessons about growing up. Noted as one of Nicholas Hoult's earliest performances, the film is a quintessential dramedy.
The humor comes from the heartwarming bond between the characters, but the subtle touches of drama give everything stakes. Nevertheless, About a Boy is a comfort film because its stakes aren't too high. The Oscar nominee is a highlight of Hugh Grant's career, and has stood the test of time much better than many of its early 2000s contemporaries.
1 Gladiator II (2024)
Almost 25 years after the release of the first movie, Ridley Scott returned to direct the long-awaited follow-up to Gladiator. In the sequel, Maximus' son embarks on his own quest for revenge against Roman society, and it threatens to destabilize the entire empire. The movie's star-studded new cast honors the legacy of its predecessor while adding something new as well.
The action scenes are gigantic and bombastic, and the entire film has a heightened reality. Though it plays fast and loose with history, Gladiator II is still an exhilarating thrill ride. Prime Video often carries a host of recent releases, but the Gladiator sequel is on a much larger scale. A bona fide blockbuster makes any movie binge-watch complete.
