Image via Disney+Spoiler Alert: The following article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson & the Olympians Season 2.After a strong second season, Percy Jackson & the Olympians has officially completed its adaptation of The Sea of Monsters, the second book in the Rick Riordan series of novels on which the show is based. Luckily, the show will be returning later this year for Season 3, which will adapt the events of the third book, The Titan's Curse. The first two installments see Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) dealing with the disappearance of first his mom, Sally (Virginia Kull), and then Grover (Aryan Simhadri). The next one will see Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) go missing.
Season 2 of Percy Jackson & the Olympians ends with Percy, Annabeth, Grover, Tyson (Daniel Diemer), and Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn) returning to Camp Half-Blood to learn that Luke (Charlie Bushnell) has successfully infiltrated camp with Kronos' army. During the attack, Clarisse puts the Golden Fleece on Thalia's (Tamara Smart) tree, awakening her from Zeus' (Courtney B. Vance) curse and restrengthening the camp's boundaries. After that shocking and action-packed finale, these are the major questions I have going into Season 3.
1 How Will the Series Introduce the Other Book Characters?
Just like Season 2, future seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will see the introduction of other major characters from the books, from gods, to monsters, to demigods. Season 3 has already cast three major book characters who are introduced in The Titan's Curse: Bianca (Olive Abercrombie) and Nico di Angelo (Levi Chrisopulos), as well as Zoë Nightshade (Saara Chaudry). There are still other major characters who have yet to appear, and to be announced, though.
The TV adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has yet to introduce Silena Beauregard or Charles Beckendorf, two demigods who have been attending Camp Half-Blood since before Percy first got there. They both play major roles in the later books, so it will be interesting to see how and when the show brings them in, and it would make sense for them to be introduced next season. The Titan's Curse also sees the brief introduction of Percy's friend and secondary love interest, Rachel Elizabeth Dare, who plays a more significant role in the final two books.
2 Will Clarisse Stay Friends With Percy and Annabeth?
Image via Disney+A major change from the book so far has been Clarisse La Rue's (Dior Goodjohn) character development in Season 2. The Sea of Monsters definitely shows another side to her character, but Season 2 of the series sees Clarisse becoming friends with Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson. At the end of the season, when Chris (Kevin Chacon) says that she has no friends, Clarisse smiles and looks over at the group of them as they come to rescue her.
Clarisse never becomes friends with Percy and his closest allies in the books, but now that they're friends in the series, I hope that the show will keep that going. It would be nice to see Clarisse play a larger role in their story in the seasons to come, and to have more friends than just Silena and Chris (especially because it looks like the show will be disregarding Clarisse and Chris' friendship after that confrontation in the Season 2 finale).
3 How Will His Choice in the Season 2 Finale Change Luke?
Image via Disney+Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians shows that Luke is more than just a villain. Instead, he is a demigod who lost his best friend and was neglected by his godly parent – and that's without even acknowledging his biggest motivation, which is revealed in the final book. At the end of Season 2, though, Luke makes a choice that will be impossible to come back from when he beats Percy with his fists and then nearly kills him with his sword.
Luke may have just been carrying out Kronos' orders by trying to kill Percy, but doing so without a weapon crosses a line into irredeemable territory. Luke's anger against the gods is understandable, as is the way that he falls prey to Kronos' manipulation, but him beating up a child is truly impossible to defend. From here, the show will likely still treat Luke's character with nuance, but his downward spiral will definitely be more extreme next season.
4 How Will Percy and Annabeth's Slowburn Romance Differ From the Books?
Image via Disney+One of the best parts of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books is the slowburn romance between Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase, and that has carried over into the series. Percy and Annabeth's connection is even more obvious in the show than in the books, though, so it will be interesting to see how their romance plays out moving forward. The series has already set up their central obstacle, which is that Annabeth is most comfortable in the demigod world, and Percy is most comfortable in the human world.
The books have other obstacles for them, though, that are still to come. Annabeth's loyalties to Luke and even Thalia sometimes put her in the middle of them and Percy, and Percy still has two other love interests – Rachel and Calypso – who are yet to be introduced. I'm curious to see how the series will adapt these particular storylines, and how it will show Percy and Annabeth slowly realizing their feelings, now that we are not confined to Percy's point of view.
5 How Will Holding Up the Sky Affect Percy and Annabeth in the Long-Term?
Image via Disney+As book fans know, Annabeth is gone for most of The Titan's Curse, forced to hold up the sky in the place of the titan, Atlas. In yet another step away from redemption, Luke uses his past closeness with Annabeth to trick her into taking on the burden of holding up the sky. At the end of the book, Percy briefly takes over for her, before ultimately getting Atlas to take the burden back on.
I'm curious to see what this looks like in the series, and how Percy Jackson and the Olympians will show the ramifications of Percy and Annabeth both holding up the sky. This is a lot for a demigod to handle, so much so that it gives them gray streaks in their hair, but I'm interested to see if this causes any long-term injuries or struggles for them beyond Season 3 – especially Annabeth, who will have to hold up the sky for much longer than Percy. The TV show has taken particular care to give continuity to lasting consequences, so it would make sense if holding up the sky takes a toll on them both.
6 What Will Annabeth's Storyline Look Like in Season 3 While She's Missing?
Image via Disney+Even though Grover is missing for most of The Sea of Monsters, he was still a major part of Season 2, because the series showed him while he was stuck on Polyphemus' (Aleks Pauvonic) island. Season 3 will likely do the same with Annabeth while she's stuck holding up the sky, especially because Luke will be there with her. Still, Annabeth's fate is initially a mystery, so I wonder how the show will pull off this twist while still letting viewers see what's going on with Annabeth.
Annabeth's doesn't have much of a storyline for the bulk of the Titan's Curse, either, because she is holding up the sky for most of the book. I am sure that she will have more individual storylines in Season 3 of the show, but I am curious to see what that will look like when she's still going to be holding up the sky and unable to go anywhere.
7 How Will the Show's Major Change to Thalia's Backstory Affect Her Arc?
Image via Disney+One of the biggest changes from the books so far is that in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians adaptation, it is revealed that Zeus didn't actually turn Thalia into a tree to save her from the Furies. This is true in the books, but the story is much sadder and more disturbing in the show. As it turns out, Zeus insisted that Thalia join Camp Half-Blood and fight on his behalf in the inevitable war that would come.
When Thalia refused, Zeus turned her into a tree and forced Chiron (Glynn Turman) to lie about it. In the books, things are much more straightforward when Thalia refuses to join Luke and Kronos. Now, aside from her loyalty to Annabeth, there won't be much keeping Thalia loyal to Camp Half-Blood when Luke makes that offer in The Titan's Curse. This will likely make things more complicated for Thalia next season, as the choice she has to make will be less clear than in the books.
