The early aughts were a wonderful time for readers. The Lord of the Rings was picking up steam again thanks to the arrival of Peter Jackson’s masterful cinematic trilogy, while hype was growing around the ongoing release of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Somewhere in the middle of the fantasy-based excitement came Dan Brown’s detective thriller book series, which followed a character named Robert Langdon on a quest for truth within the Catholic Church. Like the aforementioned novels, Brown’s works would also receive the big-screen treatment when, in 2006, the first title in the series, The Da Vinci Code, made its cinematic premiere. Just a few years later, filmmaker Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks would pick up the story with a follow-up titled Angels & Demons. Sadly, time is running out for fans to watch the sequel from the comfort of their own home, as it’s set to depart Peacock on February 1.
Audiences first meet Hanks’s Harvard symbologist, Robert Langdon, in The Da Vinci Code, when he goes on a globe-trotting adventure to uncover the location of the Holy Grail by way of clues found within the titular artist’s works. Picking up after the events of the first movie, Angels & Demons catapults Robert back into the center of intrigue and mystery when a piece of antimatter goes missing and is presumed to be in the hands of an Illuminati terrorist. Joining Hanks for his return to the role of the brainy clue hunter is a cast that includes Ayelet Zurer (Daredevil), Ewan McGregor (Doctor Sleep), Stellan Skarsgård (Dune), and more.
On paper, Angels & Demons had everything it needed to become the next box office winner for Sony Pictures. Not only did it have a top-tier cast and a popular book from which to base its story on, but it also had the directorial talents of Howard, with writer Akiva Goldsman adapting the screenplay. On top of that, celebrated composer Hans Zimmer wrote a bulletproof soundtrack that fully fleshed out the wave of drama needed to back the nail-biting story. Yet, The Da Vinci Code sequel struggled to impress both audiences and critics alike, receiving largely negative reviews, despite its massive financial gains.
What’s Next for Tom Hanks?
Despite Angels & Demons' rocky reception, Hanks eventually returned to the lead role in 2016’s Inferno, but don’t expect to see him in more tales from The Da Vinci Code chronicles anytime soon. Instead, audiences can soon expect to hear Hanks return to one of his most beloved performances of all time when he and several other familiar names reprise their beloved roles in Toy Story 5, which is slated for a theatrical arrival on June 19.
Head over to Peacock now to stream Angels & Demons before the clues run cold.
