It's been nearly 3 years since Anya Taylor-Joy's billion-dollar hit released in theaters, and fans are still flocking to the film on streaming, months before its sequel is set to debut. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an animated feature based on the hit Nintendo game. Taylor-Joy plays Princess Peach, where, unlike the games, this Mushroom Kingdom royalty isn't the damsel in distress.

During the weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie returned to Netflix's Top 10 Movies chart, placing at #10, just under Madagascar. This isn't the first time the animated fantasy has landed on streaming charts, as the film has been in the Top 10 on Netflix and Prime Video from time to time, showcasing how much people like this film, and how people are tuning in once again in preparation for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows Mario (Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) as they enter a warp pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom. Here, they are separated, leading to the green overalls-clad brother to wind up captive in Bowser's (Jack Black) castle. The movie grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the 2nd-highest-grossing film of the year. It was highly praised by fans, earning a Verified Hot score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, it received numerous accolades, including three nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, a nomination for Best Animated Film at the Saturn Awards, and a Best Adaptation nomination at The Game Awards.

What Do We Know About 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie'?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and will feature the return of the first film's original voice cast, along with newcomers Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. The trailer has already been released, and shows the young Koopa fighting the Mario Brothers to save his father from Peach's captivity, leading Mario and the gang on an epic adventure across the galaxy. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was greenlit back in 2024 following the first film's success. Nintendo and Illumination have been tight-lipped about what the film would be about, but have said it will appeal to those who have yet to embrace Nintendo and the Mario IP.

The Super Mario Bros Movie is available to stream on Netflix and Prime Video. Its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, enters theaters on April 3, 2026. Follow Collider for more updates.
