Astonishing moment woman in the crowd SHUTS DOWN Dave Hughes' comedy gig: 'Censor my gig'

Dave Hughes might be one of Australia's most well-known comedians, but that doesn't mean he's immune from heckling.

The funnyman, 55, took to Instagram on Monday to share a bizarre exchange with a disgruntled audience member during a stand-up set in Noosa over the weekend.

He shared a short clip that showed him addressing a female audience member who was standing in the aisle.

While little context was given in the clip, the woman appeared agitated and was seen turning to face the crowd, apparently for validation.

Expanding on the incident in the clip's caption, Dave said that the woman attempted to 'censor' his act – something which had never happened in his three-decade career.

'For the first time in my 33-year stand-up comedy career, an audience member in the front row attempted to censor my act,' Dave captioned the surprising post.

He revealed that the exchange occurred 20 minutes into his set at the J Theatre in Noosa which had, up to that point, been going swimmingly.

Dave said that the reason for the woman's disquiet was the fact that he was telling jokes on stage about his son, Rafferty, 16.

'Think it was about 20 minutes in, show was going great, she stood up, yelled 'Stop', then turned to face the audience and said that I must not ever make fun of my son on stage,' he said.

'I tried explaining to her that he gives me a hard time too, and we mock each other constantly, and it's all love, and I'm proud of him, but she wasn't having it.'

Dave added that, rather than being escorted from the venue, the woman chose to leave of her own accord.

However, Dave found out after the fact that she was there in the capacity as a carer for another audience member.

'She ended up leaving. I found out after the show that she was there as a carer for another bloke, so she probably had no idea what my act was,' Dave said.

'The bloke she was a carer for also had to leave a few mins after she walked out, cos she was giving him a lift home.'

Dave continued, saying he wished he knew of the situation while the incident was unfolding.

'If I'd known that while on stage, I would have told him to stay and that I would give him a lift home in my hire car,' he said.

'I'm happy to give him a refund or free tix to another show if he sees this!'

The post was met with a flurry of comments from fans, with many praising Dave for his 'thoughtful' approach to the incident.

'We were there and you were really thoughtful and respectful in how you responded! It was a cracking night overall and please come back to Noosa soon!!!' one wrote.

Another chimed in with a similar comment: 'You handled the situation with humour and grace, super professional @dhughesy.

'Thanks for a wonderfully hilarious night, our 15-year-old daughter was with us and she loved it too!'

Dave, who is known for pushing the envelope, recently revealed the one time he went too far – and offended his wife Holly's family.

He admitted that he once 'got the giggles' while hosting a radio show at an 'inappropriate' time when Holly's grandmother had just died.

'A couple of years ago, when my wife's grandmother passed, I was on radio and for some reason – I can't remember the actual incident or what triggered it – but I might have got the giggles,' he told Stellar Magazine earlier this month.

'It was inappropriate and I knew that. It's like laughing in church,' he continued.

'Sometimes you're not meant to laugh. And so that's when you do laugh because you're not meant to.

'I was trying to stop laughing, but I think her uncle was listening to the radio at the time and he was very offended and fair enough, too.

'So that took a little bit to get him back on board.'

Dave married his wife Holly on New Year's Eve in 2006 and they share three children together: Rafferty, 16, Sadie, 14, and Tess, 12.
