The Attack on Titan anime concluded in November 2023 after more than ten years. While Attack on Titan's ending was controversial, one of the saddest things for fans was that Mikasa and Eren didn't end up together. However, new official content has just confirmed who was Mikasa Ackerman's next love interest after the story's conclusion.
One of Attack on Titan's biggest debates is whether Mikasa and Jean were canon. Jean Kirstein had a one-sided crush on Mikasa throughout Attack on Titan's story, and although many didn't consider him a romantic interest, fans speculated extensively about their potential marriage. Although Mikasa's relationship with Jean remained ambiguous, the franchise has just confirmed it in a new guide.
Attack on Titan’s Anime Finally Confirms Mikasa and Jean's Relationship
In the final segment of Attack on Titan, an older Mikasa is seen visiting Eren's grave with an unidentified man who, due to their similar build, fans speculate could be Jean. Many fans were reluctant to believe the pair would end up together, but this has been suggested in a new guide included with the Blu-ray release of Attack on Titan: The Final Attack.
Attack on Titan: The Final Attack included a new descriptive audio guide for blind or visually impaired viewers, which reignited the controversy surrounding Mikasa and Jean after the narration explicitly mentioned they are visiting Eren's grave along with their descendants at the end of the film.
"As months and years pass, Mikasa and Jean bring their child to visit the grave. Later, the two, now elderly, visit together with their children and grandchildren.”
This audio guide is also currently available in Japanese theaters using the accessibility app UDCast, and Miho Furomi, who was in charge of the script, confirmed on X that the audio guides were created after careful confirmation and consideration. This suggests the revelation was approved by the anime producers in order for fans to understand the best of the ending, which will confirm Mikasa and Jean's relationship as canon.
Fans are Split Over Mikasa X Jean's Controversial Ship
Although many fans do not consider the new audio guide to confirm Mikasa x Jean as canon, given that their relationship was left open to interpretation in the manga, it is known that the creator of Attack on Titan, Hajime Isayama, was involved in the production of the latest film.
The author also drew the characters close to each other in a recent illustration for Attack on Titan's Plum Wine with Jean gazing at Mikasa, which suggests his feelings for her never changed. While Mikasa never forgot her love for Eren, which is proven by the fact that she kept visiting the grave.
Mikasa was even buried using the scarf Eren gifted her, and the fact that she might have eventually gotten together with Jean is a sign that she moved on and found a new happiness in the world that Eren created for them. Nevertheless, this reignited controversy shows how Attack on Titan keeps stirring up fans even years after its conclusion.
