While The Legend of Korra is much beloved among the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom, many fans still felt cheated by the sequel, as it completely skipped over a crucial era for the original gang. Now, however, it looks like that mistake is finally being rectified with the announcement of a new AtLA spinoff.
The next chapter in AtLA will follow Aang and Katara’s daughter, Kya, in The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand. However, this sequel won’t be airing on Nickelodeon, instead taking place within the pages of a new comic series by writer Kiku Hughes (Displacement) and artist Alex Monik (The Legend of Korra: Patterns in Time, Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island).
The two creatives will also be working in collaboration with Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, helping ensure the authenticity of the spin-off.
Kya Finally Takes Center Stage in a Long-Missing Avatar Era
The New Legend of Korra Comic Rewinds the Timeline Fans Have Wanted for Years
Slated for a July 28, 2026 release, The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand will center on Kya sharing stories from her youth while helping Korra recover in the Southern Water Tribe. The story transports fans to a criminally unexplored era of the AtLA franchise, spotlighting one of The Legend of Korra’s most intriguing yet underrated characters.
Below readers can find an official synopsis for the graphic novel, teasing the core premise of this Kya-centric story:
“Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable. Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought.”
Following Aang and Katara’s daughter during her youth turns back the clock on AtLA storytelling, placing the focus on an era that both the original Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra series failed to explore. This makes the story a must-read for fans long disappointed by the major time skip between the two shows.
The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand will join an ever-growing list of Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novels, including Ashes of the Academy, Avatar: The Last Airbender—Suki, Alone, and Avatar: The Last Airbender—The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer. Like these titles, the new series is poised to meaningfully expand the AtLA universe, making it a must-read for longtime fans.
The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand from Dark Horse Comics will be available July 28, 2026!
