Shonda Rhimes Makes Red Carpet Appearance With Her 3 Daughters at ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 Premiere
It would appear to this author that Francesca Bridgerton is in for a bumpy ride.
Indeed, Hannah Dodd is teasing the inner turmoil that is headed her character’s way in part two of Bridgerton season four—which drops on Netflix Feb. 26—following the return of Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), the cousin of her husband John Stirling (Victor Alli) to whom Francesca feels inexplicably drawn.
“Michaela is a massive tornado in Francesca's life,” Hannah told E! News’ Will Marfuggi in an exclusive interview. “Something happened in Scotland—there was something there that I think Michaela is a presence that's quite confronting for Francesca.”
Plus, her cousin-in-law’s arrival in London couldn’t happen at a worse time: Not only have Francesca and John welcomed the Bridgerton family to their home, but the couple is also finally finding their stride after a somewhat lackluster start to their union (which occurred in season three).
“John and Francesca have got closer and closer, and really worked hard on their relationship,” Hannah explained. “[They] really faced some quite difficult conversations and grown really close, and they're finally in this really, really good place.”
She continued, “She's opened their home—it's such a gorgeous metaphor, like letting everybody in, being proud of her relationship. And then Michaela shows up again. She knows it's going to be carnage and it's going to throw her off.”
But while OG book readers will understand why the fifth Bridgerton child feels so unsettled in the presence of Michaela—who in Julia Quinn’s book series is a man named Michael Stirling—Francesca is still putting the pieces together in season four.

As Hannah explained, “I don't think she fully understands what it is that Michaela does to Francesca, but she knows that it messes things up a little bit for her, and she can't put things neatly in a box. And I think there's like a jealousy of their relationship, John and Michaela's, but also what it stirs up inside her.”
However, wary of giving too much away, Hannah simply concluded, “There's loads of good stuff with Michaela's return.”
Plus, there’s still loads of good stuff to enjoy between Francesca and John this season—including Francesca’s search for, as she puts it, the “pinnacle” in the bedroom.

And while there’s already “so much love and respect” in Francesca and John’s relationship, this experience helps them move to the next level.
“That story sort of represents so much more within their relationship,” Hannah added. “As well as it does in relationships in general.”
