A cinematic obsessive with the filmic palate of a starving raccoon, Rob London will watch pretty much anything once. With a mind like a steel trap, he's an endless fount of movie and TV trivia, borne from a misspent youth of watching monster movies on TV, perusing the sun-faded goods at the local video rental shop, and staining his fingers with ink from the Video Movie Guide. Areas of interest include science fiction, film noir, horror flicks, '70s disaster pictures, Bond movies, '90s action, giant robots, dinosaurs, super heroes, and the exuberantly schlocky output of Cannon Films. He also enjoys both Star Trek and Star Wars when they're good, and maybe even more when they're bad. As a Canadian, he also has a vested interest in Canadian movies and TV shows, especially the cheesier ones dubbed "Canuxploitation."
An expert on Marvel Comics, he has also written for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and is a member of the Marvel Research Team. He can frequently be found pontificating on comic-book continuity or bemoaning the misfortunes of the Toronto Maple Leafs on his Twitter account.
Chronicle's Dane DeHaan is going to cyberwar in the new techno-thriller Wardriver. Collider has an exclusive first look at the trailer and poster for the film, which is racing into theaters this spring. It will be released in theaters on March 20, and will be available on digital and on-demand on March 27. In the trailer, Dehaan is a hacker for hire. However, he's not your typical home-bound code-cracker: he's a wardriver, which means he's always on the move, roaming the dark streets in his car and moving from one network to another as he steals from digital bank vaults.
As you can imagine, it's the kind of job that can get you in a lot of trouble, and that's exactly what happens when he runs afoul of Oscar (Mamoudou Athie, Sorry For Your Loss), a high-tech crimelord. He's forced to heist a million dollars from the account of femme fatale Sarah (Sasha Calle, The Flash). There's only one problem: it wasn't her money. She was just laundering it for a mob lawyer (Jeffrey Donovan, Burn Notice), who wants it back...with interest. Now he's joining forces with Sarah, despite his better judgment, as he's pulled into a life of crime that won't offer him the protection of being behind a computer screen. The film also stars Killers of the Flower Moon's William Belleau.
Who Are the Creatives Behind 'Wardriver'?
Wardriver is directed by Rebecca Thomas; a veteran TV director, she's helmed episodes of Archive 81, Sweet/Vicious, and the recently concluded Netflix megahit Stranger Things, in the form of the much-talked-about season 2 episode "The Lost Sister." Wardriver is her sophomore feature; she made her debut with the 2012 indie coming-of-age film Electrick Children. The film was penned by Daniel Casey, who penned the science fiction action film Kin and the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, F9; he is next slated to write and produce a TV adaptation of the Mass Effect video game franchise for Amazon.
Image via The AvenueAlthough it might not seem like the most cinematic subject, computer hacking has long been fertile ground for film-makers. The Matthew Broderick Cold War thriller WarGames kicked off the genre with a bang in the 1980s; notable subsequent entries include the Robert Redford vehicle Sneakers, countercultural fave Hackers, the Hugh Jackman actioner Swordfish, and Michael Mann's cult favorite Blackhat.
Wardriver will be released in theaters on March 20; it will be available on digital and on-demand on March 27. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
