To be a child of the early 90s is to know the greatness of the Disney Afternoon programming block. Hours were spent on the couch with Tailspin, Darkwing Duck, and the like every single weekday. When the Disney Afternoon Collection of games dropped in 2017, it was a perfect bit of nostalgia to drag us right back to that time. Well, it's time to head back to the couch again, as the Disney Afternoon Collection is getting an updated release — with two more games.
The new Disney Afternoon Collection drops on Feb. 26, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. It'll be available digitally, of course, but there will also be physical copies for those of us who just refuse to give up on physical media. And, yes, it comes with all the games in the previous installment, along with the addition of two new titles. And while we're excited to play both, one of them is definitely a much higher priority.
Image: Disney/Digital Eclipse/AtariThe Goof Troop game for Super Nintendo, which was originally released in 1993, joins the collection. And while that's good news simply because Goof Troop was an excellent show that then led to a perfect film, there's a very different reason we're excited about this one.
Goof Troop is co-designed by Shinji Mikami, who would go on to direct the original Resident Evil three years later. Since then, he's had a stellar career that led to him founding Tango Gameworks, the studio behind the Evil Within franchise, among other games.
The other new game doesn't have quite the same pedigree. Bonkers, based on the animated series about a cat that's also a cop, was also a Super Nintendo release, arriving in 1994. Much like the show, the Bonkers game didn't really break through like several Disney Afternoon franchises, likely because the main character has no discernible connection to Disney.
You can check out the full game lineup below.
- Goof Troop (SNES)
- Bonkers (SNES)
- DuckTales (NES)
- DuckTales 2 (NES)
- Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (NES)
- Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2 (NES)
- TaleSpin (NES)
- Darkwing Duck (NES)
That's quite the package if you've never purchased the Disney Afternoon Collection before. But even if you have, this is the first time the collection will be available on the Switch or Switch 2, and these are the exact kinds of games you want to play on the go with a portable console.
While the games retain their original art and controls, there are also a bunch of upgrades to modernize them a bit. Save and rewind are both included for all the games, as well as a number of special features that give you access to archival Disney content, a music player, and an image gallery. And the six games originally released on NES — everything but the two new titles — include speed-running modes and online leaderboards.
The only thing missing is some kind of ridiculous special edition with a life-size statue of Scrooge McDuck that looks to be made out of gold. That said, a news release notes that the physical edition of the game will have a few goodies inside when it arrives in May. Beyond the game cartridge, you'll find sticker sheets, postcards, milk caps, and a reversible cover inside. And if you weren't alive when these shows were on and don't know what milk caps are, ask your parents about Pogs.
