Zach joined the ScreenRant Anime team as a contributor in June 2024, before taking on a Senior Writer role in November. Since then, he has covered breaking news and produced features and lists about the most popular anime titles.

After eight years of rumors and speculation, Dragon Ball Super's TV return was finally announced at the series' 40th Anniversary Genkidamatsuri special event in Tokyo. The Galactic Patrol Saga will mark the iconic franchise's first manga adaptation in nearly a decade, after 2024's Dragon Ball Daima delivered an all-new, anime original story by series creator, Akira Toriyama.

With the series' return will also come the arrival of one of Dragon Ball's greatest villains, over whom fans of the original manga have been showering praise since his first appearance. Planet-Eater Moro, a powerful and terrifying wizard, will soon make his anime debut, and show viewers exactly why fans are excited about his upcoming story arc.

Moro Is Set to Usher in a New Era for Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball has no shortage of iconic villains. From Demon King Piccolo to Majin Buu, the series went on an undeniable, legendary run of antagonists with which few other anime and manga franchises can compare. Since then, Dragon Ball's villains have been somewhat hit-or-miss, with highlights like Goku Black, and somewhat underwhelming characters like Gomah.

However, Dragon Ball Super's return will bring along one of the franchise's better bad guys in Moro. Compared to many of the series' previous villains, who terrify the Earth with brute strength and force Goku and others to become stronger, Moro is a bit unique.

Rather than boasting raw power alone, the ancient wizard uses a variety of magical abilities that force Earth's heroes into uncomfortable fights, including having the ability to absorb energy, thus making transformations useless in battle. Moro is also one of the more sinister villains in the series.

Early on in the arc, Goku becomes stricken with fear when just sensing his presence, a scene reminiscent of the horror-inspired introduction of Cell during the original Dragon Ball series. It's been some time since the stakes felt so high in Dragon Ball, and Moro is the perfect refresher to kick off the franchise's new era.

In recent years, Dragon Ball has become somewhat reliant on rehashed villains, with both Frieza and Cell starring in major films. Even Dragon Ball Daima revisited the Demon Realm, home of Majin Buu. Moro will likely be the series' most original evil antagonist since Goku Black and Zamasu, who debuted nearly a decade ago in June 2016.

Dragon Ball Super is finally returning after a lengthy hiatus from TV dating back to March 2018 in Japan. Both the upcoming Galactic Patrol Saga and the remake/reboot, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, will keep fans busy for years to come as the series enters a new era following the passing of Akira Toriyama in March 2024.
