F1: The Movie is still #1 on streaming over a month after its release, and it's probably only going to get more popular as we enter the height of awards season. Has any sports documentary done more for its subject than F1: Drive to Survive has done for Formula 1? If there are, it's a short list.

It's so popular that Joseph Kosinski, Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, and a bunch of other Hollywood stars teamed up to make a movie about it. F1 is about as classic a sports tale as you can tell. A washed-up racer-for-hire is asked to train a hotshot rookie. A success critically and at the box office, F1 is still finding fans.

F1: The Movie Is Apple TV's Most Successful Original Film

Apple TV has taken some time to get its original movie machine off the ground. It seems to have figured out the recipe for solid original TV fare, but its film offerings are a little more hit or miss. Still, the service has sometimes gotten it right, like with Killers of the Flower Moon or F1.

In terms of box office, F1 is the most successful film ever produced by Apple TV. The film earned $631 million worldwide, making it the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the highest-grossing film by Apple Studios (via BoxOfficeMojo). While it cost between $200–$300 million, that return is still impressive (via Deadline).

The 2026 Oscar nominations have come out, and to the surprise of many, F1: The Movie earned a Best Picture nomination. It's not that F1 was bad by any means; it has an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it does feel like the odd film out among movies like One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Hamnet.

That's what we get with the 10 movie nomination list. Blockbusters with mass appeal have found their way onto it. This should only raise F1's profile higher. Now that it's in the Oscar race, Apple TV will be pushing its film harder than ever, and more people should be tuning into the sports drama.

A Sequel To F1 Looks More Likely Than Ever

Unless the director is named "James Cameron", most movies aren't expected to succeed as well as F1 did. That's just a recipe for disappointment. So there probably wasn't that much discussion about a sequel to F1 at the premiere, but there almost certainly is now.

According to some sources, gears are starting to turn at Apple regarding a sequel (via Variety). The end of F1: The Movie finds both Joshua (Damson Idris) and Sonny (Pitt) in good places in their lives and careers. In Hollywood parlance, that means they are ready for a new adventure and a new conflict to overcome.
