George R.R. Martin will always be best known for writing the series of novels that inspired Game of Thrones, but he’s also a producer on a near-perfect supernatural Western series that’s trending on streaming ahead of its newest season. Martin serves as a producer on Dark Winds, the police procedural starring Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon following two Navajo police officers in the 1970s who are forced to challenge their spiritual beliefs while working on a double murder case. The first three seasons of Dark Winds are currently streaming on Netflix and AMC+, where it’s charged back into the top 10 ahead of the arrival of its fourth season.
Dark Winds was renewed for Season 4 almost a year ago, shortly before the Season 3 premiere, and now the show is set to return just a year later. The show first premiered in 2022 and has released one new season per year, except for 2023 — there was a two-year gap between the second and third seasons, which was reportedly due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Dark Winds Season 4 will premiere on February 15, and like Season 3, it will have eight episodes, compared to the first two seasons, which had six.
It’s a busy time for George R.R. Martin, who will spend time promoting both Dark Winds and the new Game of Thrones show in the next few weeks. HBO just released the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is based on Martin’s series of short stories about Dunk and Egg. There will be ample time for reporters to ask him about his progress on The Winds of Winter, but he’s confirmed that he’s not working on the book right now.
George R.R. Martin Has a Sour Relationship With One ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Off
Just last week, George R.R. Martin sat down for a tell-all interview about the Game of Thrones franchise, where he highlighted his poor relationship with House of the Dragon writer Ryan Condal. Martin said that the two had a great working relationship in Season 1, but things turned sour in Season 2 when Martin was asked to hand his notes to HBO, not to Condal. He says most of his notes on the show are completely ignored, especially on Season 2, which was met with a largely negative reception from fans.
Check out all three seasons of Dark Winds on Netflix, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
