The Monsterverse has done an excellent job of showcasing some excellent final battles for its Godzilla-Kong team-ups, but for its next movie, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, a different approach needs to be taken. The sixth Monsterverse film is on track to reunite Godzilla and Kong for one more battle, which is expected to be with SpaceGodzilla.

So far, Godzilla and Kong have found themselves on the same side twice, once against Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong and again in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire when they had to oppose Shimo, Skar King, and the latter's Great Ape army. Given SpaceGodzilla's high power level, another epic showdown is likely coming, but hopefully with a key difference from the last two.

Kong Shouldn't Land The Final Blow Against SpaceGodzilla

Kong holds up Mechagodzilla's head in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Although the Monsterverse has repeatedly proven that Godzilla is physically superior to Kong, both of their team-ups have ended with Kong getting the final blow against their common enemy. In Godzilla vs. Kong, it was Kong who destroyed Mechagodzilla with the axe, and it was Kong who shattered the frozen Skar King to pieces in The New Empire.

In both instances, it was easy to perceive these moments almost as consolation prizes for Kong, who lost to Godzilla in the preceding one-on-one battles. But while it may seem fair to both fanbases for both Titans to receive wins, the final act shouldn't forget who the stronger Titan is - and that's Godzilla.

If the justification for Kong finishing off Mechagodzilla and Skar King is his role in the narrative, then the same should absolutely apply to Godzilla in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. SpaceGodzilla, who is all but certain to be Supernova's villain, will obviously share a massive connection to Godzilla, so it would feel like a disservice to Godzilla if Kong is the driving force of the story yet again.

Godzilla Should Be The Main Protagonist Of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova

A roaring SpaceGodzilla

Despite Godzilla x Kong: Supernova most assuredly featuring SpaceGodzilla as the villain, there's a legitimate concern that Kong will still be the emotional anchor of the story, and therefore dominate the screen-time. The logic behind Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong making this choice admittedly does make sense, given Kong's human connection makes him easy to root for and understand.

That said, previous Godzilla movies go to show that giving the same treatment to Godzilla isn't impossible. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, and Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla are all indicative of how Godzilla's larger-than-life status doesn't have to stand in the way of the audience connecting with him on an emotional level.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, for instance, made Godzilla - and not the humans - feel like the true hero, as his only goal was to rescue his son, whose egg had been taken by the main characters. By taking inspiration from some of the 1990s Godzilla films, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova shouldn't struggle to tell an engaging, Godzilla-centric story.
