HBO Max and Studiocanal are among the buyers of Gomorrah – The Origins, the Sky Italia prequel series to the pay-TV provider’s previous gangster drama.

Beta Films has sold HBO Max rights in German-speaking Europe and Turkey, while Studiocanal has taken it in France, where is likely to play on Canal+. Other buyers include SBS (Australia), ORF (Austria), TET (Latvia) and Nova (Greece).

The HBO Max Germany deal includes rights to the original Gomorrah series and feature film The Immortal. Beta noted all three titles from the franchise will be made available across HBO Max’s German-speaking Europe footpring (Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg). In Austria, ORF has the free TV rights.

Gomorrah – The Origins recently debuted on Sky Italia and is soon to launch on Sky in the UK. Set in Naples, Italy, in 1977 it follows tough city kid Pietro who, along with his friends, survives through petty theft and low-level crime with ambitions of becoming like the neighborhood ‘king’, Angela ‘A’ Sirena. He finds himself in the graces of the young boss and soon finds himself in a power game far beyond him. Pietro goes on to become Don Pietro Savastano, the godfather of the Camorra.

The show comes from Sky Studios and Cattleya, which is part of ITV Studios. Marco D’Amore who starred in the original series directed the first four episodes and served as co-writer and artistic supervisor. Francesco Ghiaccio directed the final two episodes. The series is created by Leonardo Fasoli, Maddalena Ravagli and Roberto Saviano, who wrote the book the original series was based on. Riccardo Tozzi is the exec producer for Cattleya and Nils Hartmann for Sky Studios.

Based on the bestseller ‘Gomorra’, published by Arnaldo Mondadori Editore, the original series ran for five seasons and was sold to more than 150 territories worldwide. Feature film The Immortal, which served as a narrative bridge between seasons four and five, premiered in 2019.

Here’s the teaser trailer, which dropped in November.
