Greenland 2: Migration - Behind-the-Scenes Images Reveal Post-Apocalyptic World [Exclusive]

After Gerard Butler's disaster flick Greenland exploded as an unexpected pandemic-era hit, its sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, took over five years to finally return to the big screen. However, fans won't have to wait near as long for the post-apocalyptic sequel to come home. Ric Roman Waugh's continuation of the Garrity family's story is now available on digital just over two weeks after its theatrical debut on January 9. To celebrate, Collider has a new set of exclusive behind-the-scenes images showing Butler re-entering the bleak, destroyed world left behind by the Clarke interstellar comet.

While Greenland 2: Migration begins, well, in Greenland, where the Garrity family was living in an underground bunker, the film travels throughout Europe as the survivors leave their shelter to find a new life on the surface. As such, filming took place in locations across Iceland and the U.K. to capture the mix of ruins and wilderness on the planet's surface. A few shots highlight Butler against a woodsy backdrop, whether he's helping his on-screen son Roman Griffin Davis climb past the trees crowding their path or collaborating more closely with the crew on realizing Waugh's vision. Other shots establish the sheer scale of Migration, as Butler and co-star Morena Baccarin are surrounded by crew members and a whole host of extras trying to get the scene just right. From more extensive sets and costumes, like the bunker itself and the How to Train Your Dragon star's protective suit, to the massive team working to craft everything, the images offer a look at all the moving parts behind the $90 million continuation to Waugh's original smash.

The success of Greenland may have allowed Mirgration to operate with a much bigger budget, but the heart of the story remains with the Garritys. Years after the Clarke comet crashed into the Earth, the family, including John (Butler), Allison (Baccarin), and their son, Nathan (Davis), are forced to leave their shelter as conditions continue to get worse. They seek a new life that isn't just constant survival, but to find safety from the radiation storms and raining comet fragments, they have to return to the source of the disaster. The Clarke crater in France is their only hope, and John is determined to do everything in his power to get his loved ones there despite the danger.

'Greenland 2: Migration' Reunites the Team That Delivered the Disaster Favorite

Most of the team from Greenland remained for the sequel, though Mitchell LaFortune, who previously worked with Butler and Waugh on Kandahar, joined returning writer Chris Sparling to pen Migration. Davis also stepped in Roger Dale Floyd as Nathan in a shakeup of the main trio. The rest of the cast around him, Butler, and Baccarin, meanwhile, features Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Gausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie. While the end result didn't land with critics, audiences came away still connecting with the Garrity family, earning the film a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It'll now look to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and thrive at home as a must-watch, thrilling disaster flick.
