One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's best TV shows gets a seemingly definitive update, when fans have been waiting with bated breath for years to find out if there will be a sophomore season.

This series is Hawkeye, which dropped on Disney+ during the holiday season in 2021. Currently holding a 92% Rotten Tomatoes Score, Hawkeye is the MCU's first true holiday installment, following original Avenger Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) as he tries to deal with a new case in New York City in time to return home for Christmas, while being roped into mentoring aspiring superhero Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).

Unfortunately, in a new interview with The Direct, Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest, who previously served as a consulting producer on Hawkeye, seemingly confirmed that the second season is dead. While the team talked about story ideas for Hawkeye season 2, "the timing didn't work out in terms of Marvel and all the various pieces that need to come together," with Guest suggesting that they have now dropped it.

Check out the producer's full comments below:

There was talk at a certain point about… we did explore creatively what season 2 of Hawkeye might be if we were able to do it. Unfortunately, the timing didn't work out in terms of Marvel and all the various pieces that need to come together, but I loved working on Hawkeye. I think [Jeremy] Renner and Hailee Steinfeld are so terrific together, and I would love to see more of those two.

This update comes after Jeremy Renner saying in May 2025 that he turned down an "insult offer" to reprise his most iconic role, but, in September, he said that he would be happy to return, believing there was still a story left to tell. Then, in October, he gave fans much reason to hope when he told The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast: "We got to where we're trying to do the second season. And I think I'll get strong enough to be able to do it. And we'll work it out. It's gonna be great."

Renner suffered a serious snowplow accident in 2023, which left him with 38 broken bones, but he believed here he would be able to get in shape again to do the physically demanding role. His co-star Hailee Steinfeld, meanwhile, appeared in 2023's The Marvels and could still show up in the upcoming Avengers movies with the other burgeoning members of the Young Avengers, though she is not confirmed for anything.

Other Hawkeye cast members have also returned to the MCU since 2021. Alaqua Cox led her own show, Echo, again playing Maya Lopez, while Florence Pugh reprised the role of Yelena Belova (first playing her in Black Widow) in Thunderbolts*. Pugh alone, of these actors, is confirmed to be in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, coming in December 2026.

Hawkeye also features returning MCU star Linda Cardellini as Laura Barton, Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop, and

Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, the last being made officially part of the MCU canon for the first time. Jonathan Igla, Mad Men writer and Bridgerton producer, served as the series' creator.

As always, the MCU's many moving parts, expansive cast, and intense secrecy make it hard to tell exactly what the future holds. But Guest's comments seem to confirm that no one is working on Hawkeye, making it unlikely the show will return.
