Why Kaia Gerber Says Growing Up Around Naked Pictures of Mom Cindy Crawford Was a “Gift”
Kaia Gerber is showing love to her greatest muse.
The Palm Royale actor shared how seeing notable moments in her mom Cindy Crawford’s modeling career—specifically, her naked photoshoots—taught her about the importance of body positivity from a young age.
“They were, to me, artistic. It wasn’t vulgar; it wasn’t objectification,” Kaia, 24, told Harper’s Bazaar in an interview published Jan. 21, adding it was “a gift to grow up in a house that was without shame for the female body.”
However, that wasn’t the only way Cindy, 59, had a positive impact in her daughter’s life. When the Bottoms alum started modeling as a teen, she noted her mom tried not to coddle her because she wanted her to find her own voice in the industry.
“She doesn’t give out advice unless you ask,” Kaia explained. “But if you ask, get ready, because she’ll be very honest in ways that, sometimes, it’s hard to hear. She’s usually right, which is infuriating, but she’s also very willing to let me make a mistake that she made 30 years ago.”
Indeed, Cindy—who also shares son Presley, 26, with husband Rande Gerber— has expressed regret for certain decisions she’s made in front of the camera.
“I’ve done nude photos, lots. The only ones I regretted were the ones that I kind of got talked into,” she told Town & Country in May 2018. “I don’t want my children to ever look back and think, ‘Gosh, I wish I hadn’t done that.’ I want to empower them to just say, ‘I’m outta here.’”
The Fair Game star continued at the time, “Being a mother of two young people going into fashion, of course I worry. But let’s be honest. My kids are blessed in that business because they aren’t coming in as unknowns. People will know I will come after them if they mess with my kids.”

And while Kaia is appreciative of all the special gems her mom has taught her about modeling, there’s two solid pieces of advice that’ll always top her list.
“She taught me it’s important to have a thought behind your eyes when you’re posing—to actually feel what you’re trying to pose as,” she admitted in an April 2017 Glamour essay.That has helped me so much on set. Also, to be professional and punctual and kind to everybody you work with.”
After all, she learned that beauty isn’t just a physical trait, but also how you naturally present yourself to other people.
“With beauty, my mom’s three favorite words have always been: Less is more,” she added. “Her beauty is more about her presence than anything specific she does with her hair or makeup, and that concept definitely stays with me.”
