The Marvel Cinematic Universe's new series, Wonder Man, introduces a powerful new hero, raising the question of where his power stands when compared to the franchise's biggest villain, Thanos. When it comes to the MCU's power levels, the franchise has at times played fast and loose with them. That said, characters like Thanos, Thor, Captain Marvel, the Scarlet Witch, and more have consistently impressed.

Many characters in the MCU movie timeline have demonstrated major feats of strength, such as Thor withstanding the might of a star or the Scarlet Witch altering reality around her. However, as the main villain of two of the MCU's best movies, Thanos has operated on a level of his own. After all, he was responsible for handing the Avengers the team's worst defeat.

Thanos has since died, with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom set to become the new main villain of the MCU in the next two Avengers movies. The character is described as a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic. Still, at this time, Thanos stands as the MCU's most powerful villain.

Because of that, any new character that joins the franchise ends up being compared to the Mad Titan at some point. While most MCU heroes do not get near the level of power that Thanos is known for, Simon Williams, star of the MCU's Wonder Man series, is not a regular hero. The Disney+ series sets up a bright MCU future for the hero.

Wonder Man's Powers Explained

Wonder Man MCU Suit

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Marvel's Wonder Man.Throughout Wonder Man, we slowly unravel the mystery of who Simon Williams really is. While his dream is to be a successful actor, not a superhero, Simon is revealed to have powers. Not only that, but they are extremely dangerous. It is the hero's destructive nature that attracts the attention of the Department of Damage Control.

When Simon was only 13 years old, he caused an accident, releasing enough energy to wreck his kitchen. Since then, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's MCU character has kept his powers hidden. Because of that decision, Simon's powers are not shown a lot in Wonder Man. While he does fight petty criminals at one point, there are no full-on superhero battles.

Marvel Officially Unveils 2 Heroes’ Suits In The MCU’s New TV Show

Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday and other releases, the MCU's first new TV show of 2026 has revealed two superhero suits for new characters.

Still, Wonder Man's powers are shown to belong on the MCU's top shelf. When Simon finally unleashes his rage towards the end of the season, he creates an energy outburst that obliterates an entire soundstage on the studio lot where he was shooting the in-universe Wonder Man remake. Wonder Man's ending adds another power, as Simon flies out of the Supermax Prison carrying Trevor Slattery.

Marvel does not really explore the full scope of Wonder Man's powers in the MCU series, nor does the project explain how his powers work. In Marvel Comics, Wonder Man can shoot ionic energy from his eyes and his hands, the same blasts seen in the MCU series. Additionally, Wonder Man can fly, is nearly indestructible, is essentially immortal, and more.

Thanos' Powers Explained

Josh Brolin as Thanos in Avengers Infinity War

Thanos is the MCU's biggest villain to date, and his feats of strength were more than enough to put him on that pedestal. When Thanos became the main threat in Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios made sure to show the audience that he was unlike any other villain from the start. Thanos, without any Infinity Stones, fought the Hulk in hand-to-hand combat.

The result was clear, as he obliterated the hero, leaving the Hulk, one of the MCU's most powerful heroes, so scared that Bruce Banner could not get him to come out for the rest of the movie. Thanos also killed Loki and Gamora and defeated the Avengers in multiple battles. With the Infinity Stones, his power levels rose to a whole new threshold.

Thanos was, at one point, the most powerful character in the entire MCU. The Mad Titan used all of that power to erase half of the universe's population, a feat no other villain has been able to match thus far. With the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos was able to defeat powerful characters like Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange in one-on-one fights.

In Marvel Comics, Thanos' powers include the ability to blast cosmic energy, something that the MCU never saw the villain use. Thanos was also cursed with immortality, with additional powers including mind-control. Simply put, Thanos is even more powerful in the comics than he is in the MCU.

Thanos Is More Powerful

Josh Brolin's Thanos smiles as he performs the snap with the gauntlet in Avengers Infinity War

After watching Thanos' MCU appearances and Marvel's Wonder Man, there is no doubt that, at this moment, Josh Brolin's Thanos is the most powerful character of the two. Sure, Simon Williams is shown to be incredibly powerful, but he is not a superhero and has spent most of his life hiding his true nature.

As such, his powers have not developed to the level they would need to be to rival Thanos, nor would he know how to wield them in a way that could take out the Mad Titan. With more time and practice, I could see Wonder Man getting up to or close to Thanos' level, without adding the Infinity Gauntlet, of course.
