Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Fallout season 2, episode 7.
Walton Goggins and Fallout showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet tease what the return of Robert House (Justin Theroux) means for the season 2 finale.
Flashbacks set 200 years earlier, before the nuclear bombs were dropped, featuring House have been incorporated throughout the season. While he clearly had significant influence over the world two centuries ahead, his role in the present, and whether he still exists, has been a mystery. This changed in season 2, episode 7, "The Handoff," when Goggins' character, Cooper Howard/the Ghoul, discovers that House's consciousness has been preserved, with the eccentric individual returning via a giant screen through the use of the cold fusion diode.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Robertson-Dworet explains how House's return is possible after so many years and how the cold fusion was always part of his endgame. Check out her comments below:
It did seem to us like a version of himself powered by cold fusion would be sort of the ultimate possible incarnation of Robert House. And as someone who is interested in robotics and artificial non-biological versions of selves, it made a lot of sense to us that this would've been something that he would've developed and sort of be the ultimate version of him. I've always seen it as something that allows for many players' experiences to have happened, but still Robert House had this other version of himself, that he was always ready to create and what he needed was the diode.
When asked whether the audience can trust that this is House's final form, Robertson-Dworet gives a cryptic response: "That's an interesting question. I'm not answering that, but I'm very intrigued by the question." She does discuss what episode 7's ending revelation means for the Ghoul in the upcoming finale and whether he will finally reunite with his wife and daughter after giving House what he wanted.
The question is, what is Coop's bargain. He's just given House what he wanted after 200 years. He's finally given him the thing that he's most desired. And the question, of course, is what will he get in exchange? He obviously is looking for his wife and daughter, and what will he find?
While Goggins does not address what will happen between his character and House, he hints that "something profound" will transpire for the Ghoul and Lucy (Ella Purnell) in the season 2 finale.
Walton Goggins: I can tell you that in episode 8, without giving something away to your audience, something profound happens for both the Ghoul and Lucy that would also be my favorite, but we can't talk about that.
