Jacob Elordi has left fans divided after he spat gum into his mother's hand while walking the red carpet at the Los Angeles world premiere of Wuthering Heights.

The Australian actor, 28, was spotted sheepishly placing the chewed-up lolly in Melissa Elordi's hand on Wednesday as she patiently waited for him to take photos.

Video footage of the moment has since gone viral online, leaving followers divided over the 'gross' act.

The clip saw the actor walking the red carpet before he abruptly turned to his mother and secretly pulled gum out of his mouth to hand to her.

With a cheeky smile, he placed it into Melissa's outstretched hand before continuing on with his red carpet walk.

'This is not cute,' one person wrote online, as another said simply: 'Gross!'

'I just audibly gasped,' added a third.

'Next time... swallow it... that's what us women would've done... baby,' someone else commented.

However, most fans came to Jacob's defence and commended his mother for being a supportive parent.

'Mum always to the rescue. I love how close he is with his parents,' one person said.

'Once a mum always a mum, red carpet or no,' commented another.

Even actor Adrien Brody, who received backlash for throwing his gum to his girlfriend Georgina Chapman before giving a speech at the 2025 Oscars, made a remark.

'Relatable,' the star joked.

It comes after Jacob admitted he was 'nervous' to star in Wuthering Heights alongside actress Margot Robbie.

The actor plays a leading role in the highly anticipated movie, sharing the screen with fellow Aussie and Barbie star Margot.

Wuthering Heights, the latest big screen adaptation of Emily Brontë's iconic gothic romance, is set to be released in cinemas just before Valentine's Day on February 13.

Margot, 35, and Jacob play lovers Catherine and Heathcliff in the highly anticipated romance drama, produced by Margot and her production company LuckyChap Entertainment.

In a new interview, Jacob revealed his fears before the cameras started rolling as he was taken aback by the sheer scale of the production.

Posing for the cover of Esquire UK's March/April issue, he said: 'The older I get, the more nervous I get... it was a big movie, and the crew was big and the sets were big.'

He was speaking to Wuthering Heights' director Emerald Fennell, who said: 'Yes, and also Margot is the biggest star in the world and you're playing opposite each other. It's f***ing big.'

Jacob continued by revealing self-doubt entered his head, which left him wondering if he had studied and read enough.

Jacob said: 'There's 600 people there that have put so much work and effort in, who've toiled and waited and not seen their families, and then you need to come in and put a layer onto the cake.

'There is a pressure that you're not going to be what people want you to be. There will probably always be an imposter element to acting for me, just because I dreamt about it so intensely that it almost feels like it couldn't have happened.'
