Those who are always seeking out crime or thriller hidden gems may want to know about a forgotten entry that is now reemerging.
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's (The Lives of Others, Never Look Away) The Tourist is a 2010 crime thriller movie starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie about a man who travels to Venice following a breakup, who becomes entangled with a mysterious new woman. When it hit theaters 16 years ago, The Tourist was a decent commercial success, grossing $278 million worldwide on a budget of $100 million.
Now, The Tourist has become a streaming success among certain HBO Max audiences, being the no. 1 movie in eight regions as of January 23, per FlixPatrol. The Tourist is not available on HBO Max in the U.S., where potential viewers can rent or purchase it digitally via platforms such as Prime Video. However, it is one of the top three movies in countries including Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, and several more.
Notably, The Tourist is a remake of the 2005 French film of the same name directed by Anthony Zimmer. However, 2010's The Tourist has a dismal 21% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, against an audience score of 42%. Seemingly, the movie was driven to success by its thriller elements and high-profile cast (which also includes Paul Bettany and Timothy Dalton).
The Tourist's profit margin is even more impressive, considering its larger budget of $100 million. Its release resulted in a small battle between Depp and Ricky Gervais when the latter mocked the movie while hosting the 2011 Golden Globes. Depp then went on to appear on Gervais' (scripted) TV show Life's Too Short, where he confronted him.
When The Tourist was released, Depp had just come off appearing in Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton's highest-grossing movie to date. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor would next star in the animated feature Rango. Jolie, meanwhile, was in between Salt and Kung Fu Panda 2 at the time (following Kung Fu Panda being a smash hit a few years earlier in 2008).
Regardless of where they are now, when the state of the box office overall is very different, these two actors managed to pull off another hit then. The Tourist is hardly one of Johnny Depp or Angelina Jolie's best movies, but it is the kind that is primed for an afterlife on streaming years later.
