“How to Get Away With Murder” star Karla Souza, Daniel Giménez Cacho (“Zama”) and Álvaro Guerrero (“Ingobernable”) have joined Diego Luna in “Mexico 86,” produced by Gaumont USA and directed by Gabriel Ripstein (“600 Miles”).
The movie is now finalizing post-production, turning on Mexico’s long-shot bid to host the 1986 Cup and one of multiple upcoming soccer movie and series titles in a FIFA World Cup soccer year, the extra cast for “Mexico 86”.
Souza and other cast was revealed by Netflix on Thursday at a press event in Mexico City where the U.S. streaming giant also announced that it will release around the world as a Netflix Original the upcoming feature-length documentary on Saul “Canelo” Álvarez, Mexico’s four division middleweight boxing champion of the world. In further news, as it drilled down on its 2026 release slate, Netflix also announced new series with “Lord of the Skies” star Fernanda Castillo and “Who Killed Sara?” lead Manolo Cardona, plus Netflix’s first live event in Latin America. It also released first look photos from “Mexico 86” featuring a notably kempt Luna, almost unrecognisable behind a big period moustache, and of Gael García Bernal in hs first Netflix series, playing opposite Paulina Dávila in “Santita.”

In 2026, we will launch an unparalleled variety of stories that explore new perspectives and genres, driven by the creativity and passion of the best Mexican talent,” Carolina Leconte, VP Content Mexico and Regional Licensing, said at Thursday’s event. “From epic dramas to comedies, adventures, action, and the best in live entertainment. These titles not only reflect our culture but also celebrate who we are and leave their mark, building collective memory,” she added.
Netflix Mexico New Shows, Movies
Canelo Álvarez currently rates as the second best paid sports professional in the world, according to sports website Sportico.
His doc feature catches Álvarez as he enters the fight that will define his boxing legacy, the epic trilogy face-off with against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Directed by Juan Camilo Cruz, the doc feature is produced by Unanimous Media and its founders, NBA champion Stephen Curry and creative partner Erick Peyton, Sharla Sumpter Bridgett, Levon Davis and Brady Palubiski. The Álvarez” doc is not dated by Netflix but described as “coming soon.”
In another lineup highlight, Netflix unveiled Thursday its first live event in Latin America, the second edition of “Supernova Genesis,” which will take place at the Arena Ciudad de México in April with live performances by top local artists such as Carín León and amateur boxing matches between influencers and celebrities. News of one between two influencers, pitching he seemingly fragile Lupita Villalobos against the short-fused Kim Shantal was already going viral on Thursday. Expecting 22,000 spectators, the event will be the first time it will be broadcast live by Netflix.
In further news from Thursday’s Mexico City press conference, “Who Killed Sara? lead Manolo Cardona will star alongside Erik Hayser, best known for his role in “Ingobernable,” and Silvia Navarro (“Papá o Mama”) in “El Otro Padre.”
A series, it turns on Julieta who, during her graduation party suffers suffers a life-threatening health crisis that forces her mother, Maca, to face secrets from the past.
Netflix describes the series as an “intense drama where love, truth, and sacrifice intertwine in a race against time.” Directed by Anileine Cal (“Nothing to See Here”) and Carlos Villegas, “El Otro Padre” will be produced by Mar Abierto (“Unconfessable Sins”).
In another new series announcement Thursday, Fernanda Castillo, famed for her role in Telemundo’s “Lord of the Skies,” is set to star in new Netflix series “Alicia’s Law,” produced by CBS Studios in association with TIS Estudios.
Castillo leads a top notch Spanish-language cast also taking in Juan Manuel Bernal (“The Head of Joaquín Murrieta”) and Michel Brown (“The Marked Heart”). The series is directed by “Like Water for Chocolate” series co-helmer Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos, José Ramón Chávez (“Papa Soltero”) and Erik Baeza (“Rosario Tijeras”).
Also unveiled Thursday, the movie “Takedown” toplines Alfonso Herrera (“Sense 8”) and Noe Hernández (“600 Miles”) as two cops who in a routine stop pull over a stolen car – only to come face to face with one of the most dangerous criminals in the world. The actioner is produced by Francisco González Compeán (“Amores Perros,” “Counterattack”) and directed by Chava Cartas (“Counterattack”).
Netflix also revealed on Thursday a new reality competition show “Physical 100: Mexico,” produced by Endemol Shine Boomdog and an adaptation of the Korean original.
