Marking Aziz Ansari's feature directorial debut, the recent comedy Good Fortune might have found critical success, becoming "certified fresh" on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, but it struggled to make an impact at the box office. This was despite featuring an eye-catching central cast, including Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves, with the latter playing a low-ranking guardian angel. In the shadow of Good Fortune's poor theatrical run, viewers are switching from an angelic Reeves to a performance where he is, quite literally, tempted by the devil.

At the time of writing, Reeves' The Devil's Advocate is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Tubi in the U.S. Starring Reeves alongside a bonkers Al Pacino performance and a young Charlize Theron, the film is an adaptation of Andrew Neiderman's 1990 novel and was directed by Academy Award winner Taylor Hackford, whose last movie, The Comedian, was released a decade ago. The Devil's Advocate earned mixed reviews from critics upon arrival, but found a stronger reception from audiences, with the latter awarding an 80% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. With its blend of campy performances, legal drama, and supernatural elements, The Devil's Advocate has since become a cult hit and sustains a strong fanbase to this day. A synopsis reads:

"Aspiring Florida defense lawyer Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) accepts a high-powered position at a New York law firm headed by legal shark John Milton (Al Pacino). As Kevin moves up in the firm's ranks, his wife, Mary Ann (Charlize Theron), has several frightening, mystical experiences that begin to warp her sense of reality. With the stakes getting higher with each case, Kevin quickly learns that his mentor is planning a far greater evil than simply winning without scruples."

Was 'The Devil's Advocate' a Box Office Hit?

The Devil's Advocate, despite the popularity of its leads, had a moderately successful theatrical run back in 1997. Produced for a reported $57 million, the film returned a global haul almost three-times this figure of $153 million. Split between $61 million in domestic revenue and a further $92 million from overseas markets, the film was the 25th highest-grossing title of 1997 worldwide, and, at the time, was Reeves' highest-grossing effort for three years.
