MK2 Films, the Paris based company behind best picture contenders, has boarded Kornél Mundruczó’s “At the Sea” starring Oscar-nominated Amy Adams (“Vice”), ahead of its world premiere in competition at the Berlinale.
“At the Sea” marks the latest feature from Mundruczó, a leading Hungarian filmmaker who’s presented several films in competition at Cannes and won the Un Certain Regard prize with “White God” in 2014. His 2020 drama “Pieces of a Woman” won two nods at Venice, including best actress for Vanessa Kirby who went on to earn an Oscar nomination.
Adams stars in “At the Sea” as Laura, who returns to her home in Cape Cod after a stint in rehab following a drunk-driving accident. “Forced to confront her family, her dance company, and the broken pieces she left behind, Laura begins the difficult process of rebuilding her life. Full recovery means breaking free from the painful shadow of her renowned father, both a hero and a monster.
Due to Mundruczó’s and Adam’s awards-friendly pedigree, “At the Sea” stands out as one of the anticipated highlights of this year’s Berlinale competition lineup.
Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Chloe East (“The Fabelmans”), Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso”), Dan Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”), Jenny Slate (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Rainn Wilson (“The Office”) complete the cast.
“At the Sea” is produced by Oscar-nominated producers Alexander Rodnyansky at AR Content, and Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett at Ryder Picture Company, Stuart Manashil, Mundruczó for Proton Cinema, and Hammerstone Studios’ Alex Lebovici.
WME Independent is repping the U.S. rights. The film reunites Mundruczó with MK2 Films (“Sentimental Value,” “The Secret Agent”), which is also co-producing and handling international sales on his upcoming film “The Revolution According to Kamo,” a Joseph Stalin origin story.
The company is behind a roster of Cannes-prizewinning prestige movies such as Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent” and Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident,” and is rolling off a strong awards and festival momentum, having nabbed three Golden Globe awards, seven European Film Awards, as well as 15 and 11 nominations at the Oscars and BAFTA’s, respectively.
