Leonardo DiCaprio Ties BAFTA Record With ‘One Battle After Another’ Nomination

Leonardo DiCaprio‘s BAFTA Best Leading Actor nomination today has added his name to a gilded group.

The One Battle After Another star’s seventh Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination at the BAFTA Film Awards means he now ties with Daniel Day-Lewis, Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, Jack Lemmon, Peter Finch, and Dustin Hoffman for the most noms in that category. He also becomes the youngest man to achieve the feat, aged 51.

In the film, DiCaprio plays Bob Ferguson, a washed-up stoner and former member of a far-left revolutionary group who frantically searches for his teenage daughter Will (Chase Infiniti), who is abducted by his former colleague Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn).

His previous nominations came for The AviatorThe DepartedThe Wolf of Wall StreetThe RevenantOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Don’t Look Up. However, he has only won the award once, through 2015’sThe Revenant, which also secured him his only Oscar for Best Actor.

It’s been a strong few weeks for DiCaprio, whose nomination for Best Actor at the Oscars for One Battle After Another was his sixth in that category, along with a Best Supporting Role nomination for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. He lost out in the Best Actor – Musical or Comedy category at the Golden Globes to Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme earlier this month.

One Battle After Another took a leading 14 BAFTA nominations today, including Best Film. This put it one ahead of Sinners, which had last week set the record for most Oscar nominations ever (16).

Also nominated in the acting categories for One Battle were Chase Infiniti, who is up for Best Leading Actress, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn for Best Supporting Actor, and Teyana Taylor for Best Supporting Actress. Paul Thomas Anderson is nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The BAFTA Film Awards take place next month at London’s Royal Festival Hall on February 22, with The Traitors star Alan Cumming hosting.
