‘Lobo’, Miguel Angel Blanco Doc & Oriol Paulo Film Added To Netflix Spain Slate

Netflix has added a feature doc about the the murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco, a miniseries about a serial killer and a feature film from Oriol Paulo on its latest Spanish slate.

As part of Netflix’s ongoing round of international slate announcements, the streamer unveiled a batch of new originals and updates on several others. Spain – and Spanish-language content more generally – has become a key subs driver for Netflix in recent years and significant money has been spent on local content.

Among the new shows Lobo stars Luis Tosar in the lead role and also features Tristán Ulloa. The miniseries is written by Alberto Marini and Juan Galiñanes, directed by Alberto Marini and Javier Rodríguez Delgado and produced by Vaca Films. Filming has just begun and there’s a first-look image above.

The show is based on the real-life case of Manuel Blanco Romasanta, a traveling tailor who became Spain’s first documented serial killer, in rural 19th-century Galicia. During his trial, he claimed to be a werewolf.

Netflix also ordered doc film Miguel Ángel Blanco: Las 48 Horas que lo Cambiaron Todo, which is directed by Jon Sistiaga and Juanjo López and produced by The Tintirin Team.

The doc explores the two days during which Spain, as millions of people mobilized in a desperate attempt to prevent the murder of politician Miguel Ángel Blanco, who was kidnapped and then killed by separatist group ETA in 1997.

En Nombre de Otro is written and directed by filmmaker Paulo and produced by Juanita Films. Eduard Fernández, Mario Casas, Blanca Suárez, Nicolás Francella and Alexandra Jiménez are starring and production is underway. The pic is billed as a “fast-paced thriller where nothing is what it seems.”

During a starry presentation in Madrid this morning, stars and execs of new titles took to the stage, including the leads of The Final Problem, Jose Coronado, Maribel Verdú and Martiño Rivas; GraciasEquipo (Raúl Tejón, Blanca Martínez and Maribel Verdú); Salvador (Luis Tosar and Claudia Salas); Murder in Galicia (Tristán Ulloa); The Child (Belén Cuesta and Karra Elejalde); Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine (Inma Cuesta, Michelle Jenner, Joel Sánchez and Tristán Ulloa); 53 Sundays (Carmen Machi, Javier Gutiérrez and Javier Cámara); and A Day Like No Other (Raphael).

Tosar and Ulloa presented Lobo, while Mario Casas, Blanca Suárez, and Nicolás Francella introduced the feature film En Nombre de Otro.

Other upcoming Netflix Spain productions include Rafa, which looks into the life and career of Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal and followed the final stage of his playing career. The 20-time Grand Slam winner, known as the King of Clay thanks to his domination of the French Open, retired in 2024.

Announced in late 2024, the pic is directed by Zachary Heinzerling, and Skydance Sports is the producer.
