For 96 years, Looney Tunes has been a staple of childhoods across multiple generations, becoming one of the most iconic cartoons of all time. Now, that legacy is finally being officially recognized as the franchise finds a new home with Turner Classic Movies.
Beginning in February, TCM will introduce the Looney Tunes library into its monthly programming lineup, kicking off with Bugs Bunny as TCM’s Star of the Month for the first time.
This celebration will feature 45 classic Bugs Bunny cartoons airing during a week-long tribute, honoring the character’s enduring legacy and influence on generations of filmmakers and animators. That TCM has become the new home of the Looney Tunes shorts speaks volumes about the franchise’s place in film history, given the network’s acclaimed reputation for showcasing classic cinema.
Looney Tunes Joins the Ranks of True Film Classics
TCM Brings Bugs, Daffy, and the Gang Into Its Celebrated Lineup, Cementing Their Place in Animation History
Turner Classic Movies is renowned as the gold standard of classic film preservation and curation. The network is celebrated for its serious respect for cinema, discerning programming, and dedication to preserving film history and cultural legacy. TCM taking on Looney Tunes confirms the franchise’s place in film history as a true classic.
TCM only attaches its name to material it considers historically and artistically important. So, it isn’t just Looney Tunes’ near-century of existence that earned it a spot on TCM’s acclaimed lineup; this is a testament to the franchise’s legacy as a trailblazing and influential piece of media.
Charlie Tabesh, SVP of Programming and Content Strategy at TCM, stated: “TCM is excited to become the ongoing television home of the Looney Tunes library. By making TCM an ongoing home for this iconic collection, we can present these cartoons with the care they deserve, alongside the classic films they helped influence.”
The press statement also confirmed that the Looney Tunes shorts will continue to be programmed regularly across TCM’s schedule beyond February and will feature other beloved characters, including Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, and Wile E. Coyote. With this, TCM has become a golden destination for Looney Tunes fans.
