NBC's underrated crime procedural The Hunting Party is coming to a new streaming service soon. The first season of the hit drama will be available to stream on Netflix for U.S. subscribers beginning February 15. It's not uncommon for networks to license their shows outside their own ecosystems, especially to a service as large as Netflix. Shows like School Spirits saw a significant growth in viewership when the first season was available on Netflix, driving interest in subsequent seasons. The streamer also recently acquired NBC shows like Found, which also saw a spike in viewership.
The Hunting Party has been successful on NBC, scoring a Season 2 renewal even when numerous scripted shows got canceled. The show has been one of the best performers on NBCUniversal's streaming service Peacock. NBC describes the drama as a high-concept crime procedural "about a small team of investigators led by former FBI profiler Rebecca 'Bex' Henderson (Melissa Roxburgh). They've been assembled to track down and capture the most dangerous killers the world has ever seen, all of whom have just escaped from The Pit, a top-secret government prison that's not supposed to exist. But as Bex races to catch these killers before it's too late, she'll discover that the one thing more twisted than the dangerous fugitives she's chasing is the prison that they just escaped from…because The Pit wasn't just a prison."
'The Hunting Party' Is 'The Blacklist' Meets 'Criminal Minds'
The show has been compared to some of the best crime procedurals of the past two decades, like The Blacklist and Criminal Minds. It features a dedicated team contracted to catch some twisted criminals. Meanwhile, there are some government conspiracies brewing under the surface that could signal deeper issues than escaped prisoners. Other cast members for the JJ Bailey drama include Nick Wechsler (Oliver Odell), Patrick Sabongui (Jacob/Ryan Hassani), Josh McKenzie (Shane Florence), and Sara Garcia (Jennifer Morales).
Collider's Isabella Soares wrote in her review of The Hunting Party Season 1 that viewers familiar with dark crime procedurals might find the show predictable. "Although the premise sounds engaging, considering that it plays out after a top-secret prison explodes and sets serial killers free, the series could've leaned more on misdirects and other unexpected twists before each of these criminals is caught by Henderson and her team," reads an excerpt from her review. However, the series features some engaging cases and a likable team, which might be enough for many.
The Hunting Party Season 1 arrives on Netflix on Sunday, February 15. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
