Neon Takes Global On ‘4 X 4: The Event’, 2nd Horror Movie With Alex Ullom – Sundance

Alex Ullom’s sophomore horror feature 4 X 4: The Event isn’t playing Sundance, but the global deal for it was just hatched here by Neon.

Sources say Neon made an aggressive deal to preemptively acquire the project ahead of production which begins later this year.

The genre and international film label picked up Ullom’s first movie, which played in competition at SXSW, It Ends last month. 4 X 4 The Event is produced by Spooky Pictures and Image Nation under their multi-title partnership, alongside Divide / Conquer as producing partners.

In 4 X 4: The Event, eight contestants enter an illegal sensory-assault livestream where they must kill or be killed using only what they can order online.

Producers for the film include Roy Lee and Steven Schneider for Spooky Pictures, Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath for Divide / Conquer, Haley Johnson, and Evan Barber. EPs are Ben Ross for Image Nation and Jakob Pollack for Spooky Pictures. The deal was negotiated by Kate Gondwe for NEON with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.

Ullom was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2024 and his debut feature It Ends, starring Mitchell Cole, Akira Jackson, Noah Toth, and Phinehas Yoon. NEON took global rights to that film and is planning a theatrical release.

Ullom is represented by UTA, Entertainment 360, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.

NEON is also collaborating with Spooky Pictures and Image Nation on Damian McCarthy’s upcoming supernatural horror film Hokum starring Adam Scott, which will release in theaters later this year. On Thursday, NEON notched 18 Oscar nominations for the 98th edition, the second most of any motion picture studio.
