In over three years at Collider, senior author Jake has now penned over 2500 articles covering a wide range of TV and film for the resources, lists, utilities, news, and interview teams. Alongside interviewing stars such as Selin Hizli, Rose Ayling-Ellis, Harlan Coben, and Chelsea Peretti, Jake was lucky enough to visit the set of Aardman and Netflix's Wallace and Gromit: A Vengeance Most Fowl in 2024, getting the chance to chat with four-time Academy Award winner Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham. Jake has also worked for other publications, including Agents of Fandom.
Whether it's the latest installment in Rian Johnson's acclaimed Knives Out series, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, or a brand-new Harlan Coben adaptation, Netflix subscribers are never far from the latest murder mystery to solve. The latest, a three-episode Agatha Christie adaptation, was released over a week ago and, despite a poor response from audiences, maintains its place in the streaming charts among the Netflix top three at the time of writing.
Sadly for writer Chris Chibnall, the response to Agatha Christie's Seven Dials has been more akin to his time showrunning Doctor Who than his crime drama masterpiece Broadchurch, with this latest series earning just 49% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. This is despite the involvement of a strong, star-studded cast, led by the hugely talented Mia McKenna Bruce as Lady Bundle Brent. She is joined by the likes of Harry Potter icon Helena Bonham Carter as Lady Caterham, Martin Freeman as Battle, Corey Mylchreest as Gerry Wade, Edward Bluemel as Jimmy Thesinger, and Nabhaan Rizwan as Ronnie Devereux. For those yet to unravel this classic literary mystery, a synopsis reads:
"England. 1925. At a lavish country house party, a practical joke appears to have gone horribly, murderously wrong. It will be up to the unlikeliest of sleuths - the fizzingly inquisitive Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent - to unravel a chilling plot that will change her life, cracking wide open the country house mystery. A witty, epic and fast-paced drama from the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie, is brought to life in a thrilling new version for Netflix."
Critics Are Split by 'Agatha Christie's Seven Dials'
It isn't just audiences that have had mixed feelings about this latest Netflix murder mystery. In David Caballero's review for Collider, he awarded the series a 5/10 score, calling it "dull," saying it is "not compelling enough to hold the viewer's attention," and adding, "the show is far from a great entry into the ever-expanding canon of TV murder mysteries." He continued, "Too slow to be riveting and too needlessly drawn out, it's a run-of-the-mill adaptation of one of Christie's most run-of-the-mill novels, and the strongest proof that not every work from the renowned author warrants a fresh take."
All three episodes of Agatha Christie's Seven Dials are available to stream on Netflix now. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for all the latest stories from the best of British television.
