KPop Demon Hunters was an instant hit, quickly becoming the most successful movie on Netflix, and the iconic movie's fandom is only growing. A sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is currently planned for release in 2029, and the world of the fictional band HUNTR/X looks set to expand with other creative projects. So far, Fortnite skins and sing-along screenings have been well-received.

It feels almost inevitable now that successful franchises will expand into other media, and while Netflix's live-action anime adaptations have been hit-or-miss, there are other options. A KPop Demon Hunters spinoff in any form must expand the movie's world, and while the three main characters in KPop Demon Hunters could carry a spinoff, there is another unlikely hero who deserves more screen time.

KPop Demon Hunters' Derpy Is A Fan-Favorite Character

Communicating only in purrs while delivering the occasional note, KPop Demon Hunters' blue tiger became an instant hit from his clumsy introduction. He and his six-eyed magpie friend visit Rumi, acting as a go-between for the Demon, Jinu. While neither character is named in the movie, creator Maggie Kang has confirmed that his name is Derpy, while the magpie is Sussie.

Derpy does not have a major role to play in KPop Demon Hunters, but his instantly recognizable character design is one of the defining images from the movie, despite the character having very little screen time. Both he and Sussie are mysterious, and a Derpy spinoff that also features Sussie could open up some exciting possibilities for the KPop Demon Hunters franchise.

A Derpy Spinoff Could Show Us More Of The Demon World

Kang confirmed that Derpy is not a Demon in an interview with Forbes, explaining, "It’s not a Demon. It’s not a Hunter, obviously. So, what is it? There’s a lot of mysteries and question marks that even I have thought about what that could be." As Derpy is able to enter the Demon world, this could be an interesting starting point.

KPop Demon Hunters sets up a sequel, but it is almost certain that this will be a full story. On the other hand, a Derpy spinoff could be more self-contained. Rather than giving Derpy a movie or even a full TV series, the spinoff could follow a similar model to Pixar shorts, and show us corners of the Demon world through his eyes.

Has A Derpy Spinoff Been Confirmed?

Kang's Forbes interview gave us a view into her thought process about the potential for expanding the KPop Demon Hunters world. She revealed that a lot of scenes had been cut, which would have answered questions. These included "the mythology behind Derpy the tiger and Sussie the six-eyed bird." With a sequel in production and more spinoffs being explored, Derpy will likely appear again.

The KPop Demon Hunters sequel must answer some questions, and Derpy's origin would be a great extra detail to include. However, a spinoff that focuses on Derpy alone has not yet been confirmed. That said, he has proven to be so popular in both the KPop Demon Hunters fandom and its merchandise that it is entirely possible he will get his own spinoff in time.
