Much to the chagrin of gamers everywhere, and to the delight of Nintendo, the company rarely puts its first-party games on sale. Nintendo has long maintained its MSRPs for years, but that changed with a recent program.
The thing is, that program is going away, as per Nintendo. Make sure to take advantage of it while you can.
Nintendo Switch Vouchers Are Going Away
They'll Be Gone After January 30
Game vouchers are a pretty simple concept. You pay $99.99 to receive two vouchers (licenses) that can be redeemed for digital Switch 1 games. Typically, games in the voucher program cap at $59.99, giving you roughly $20 in savings if you choose the voucher route.
The catalog skews toward first-party titles and includes recent releases such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but some third-party games published by Nintendo are also part of the service. The only requirement is that you must be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber to participate.
Soon, no one will be able to participate. As of today, Nintendo is discontinuing the program. To be clear, you have until 11:59PM PT tonight to buy those vouchers, or you're out of luck forever.
Here's the full statement from Nintendo: "As of 11:59 PM Pacific Time, January 30, 2026, it will no longer be possible to purchase Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers. Any vouchers you purchase on or before that date will work exactly as they currently do—unused vouchers expire 12 months after the date of purchase."
The time has come; you only have a short window to purchase vouchers. If you already have them, just remember the 12-month expiration date. It's easy to buy coupons for future purchases and forget about them.
Another thing to note is the clause that you need an "active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership" to redeem vouchers. If you're planning to have a lapsed subscription, keep that in mind.
Notably, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream (out on April 16, 2026) is eligible for the game vouchers program and has a retail price of $59.99. If you're interested in the Switch 1 version of the game, this might be the time to go for it and pick up something else.
Nintendo Rarely Discounts Its Games
Vouchers Were A Big Deal
Custom Image by: Matthew WilcoxNintendo games can be expensive even years after launch, and prices for everything are currently rising, including hardware. If you're looking to invest in a Switch 2 at some point or already have one, it could be a good way to save some cash.
For Nintendo fans, there are a lot of games to choose from, and there's plenty of time to decide. You'll just need to make a decision quickly.
