Just as it was after the release of Zack Snyder's 300, the success of the first John Wick movie inspired several copycats. Among the least successful was the movie Hotel Artemis, which was released in 2018 to mixed reviews and a disappointing box office haul. The film was written and directed by Drew Pearce, who'd worked on Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation. It featured an ensemble cast including Jodie Foster, Sterling K. Brown, and Dave Bautista, among others. The movie is set in a dystopian future where an underground hospital serves as a haven for criminals, much like the Continental did for assassins in the John Wick movies. Hotel Artemis didn't make much of an impression in its theatrical run, but it'll soon be available to discover on a new streaming platform.

Produced on a reported budget of $15 million, Hotel Artemis grossed just $13 million at the box office. Also featuring Sofia Boutella, Charlie Day, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Tyree Henry, Jenny Slate, and Zachary Quinto, the movie is sitting at a 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website's consensus reads, "Hotel Artemis has a few flashes of wit and an intriguing cast, but mostly it's just a serviceable chunk of slightly futuristic violence — which might be all its audience is looking for." Hotel Artemis ended with a tease for a sequel, which never materialized. Meanwhile, the first John Wick went on to deliver three sequels, a spin-off movie, and a spin-off television show.

Drew Pearce Has a Couple of Major Projects Lined Up

John Wick also inspired movies such as Atomic Blonde, Extraction, Nobody, The Beekeeper, and the little-seen gem The Outfit, starring Oscar-winner Mark Rylance. In the same year as Hotel Artemis, writer-director Drew Goddard released the star-studded neo-noir film Bad Times at the El Royale. The movie earned far superior reviews than Hotel Artemis, but also emerged as a box office flop. Pearce most recently wrote the script for The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. He's now prepping a possible Judge Dredd reboot for director Taika Waititi, and has written a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair for Michael B. Jordan to star in and direct.

You can watch Hotel Artemis on Paramount+ from February 1, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
