PlayStation 6 Leaked Release Year Tells Us When We Should Start Saving

The PlayStation 6 isn't likely to come cheap, but it doesn't look like you'll have to get your wallet sorted quite yet. While Sony remains quiet about plans for the next console generation, the latest information suggests that the console won't arrive for a few more years.

X user Detective Seeds suggested in a new post that a "2029 release window target is showing to be spot on," following up on information initially reported in summer 2025. According to Detective Seeds, the original information "came directly from an engineer at Playstation." That being said, the information should be taken with a grain of salt, as Detective Seeds isn't commonly considered a reliable source for leaks.

When Will The PlayStation 6 Release?

Assuming that Detective Seeds is accurate in this instance, the PlayStation 5 would likely arrive in November 2029. The PS3, PS4, and PS5 all launched in November to take advantage of the holiday season, and it seems likely that Sony will keep up this particular tradition.

In the meantime, Detective Seeds claims that a PlayStation handheld will launch before the next console generation, suggesting a holiday 2027 window as a likely possibility in a follow-up post.

It's worth noting that Detective Seeds is currently a banned source on the gaming leaks subreddit, as announced in an April 2025 X post. While that doesn't necessarily mean the information is wrong, it does stress its potential inaccuracy. The ban likely resulted from his inaccurate reporting of Oblivion Remastered's potential release date, based in part on an unreliable conversation with an Xbox support bot.

That's Plenty Of Time To Start Saving

A 2029 launch would be a big departure from previous PlayStation console generations. To date, every system has launched six or seven years after the previous one, making the PS5's lifespan unusually long.

That being said, it doesn't seem impossible that the market has shifted enough for a nine-year gap to make sense. The PS5 Pro is already a powerful and expensive option (allegedly set to get a big update this year), and introducing new hardware that can outcompete it at a viable price might not make sense in the next year or two.

Inflation and the skyrocketing prices of components like RAM have made this the first console generation to rise in price over time rather than fall, and getting players to upgrade to the next generation without mind-blowing graphical advancements could be difficult. Hopefully, we'll get some magical market shift to make the PlayStation 6 seem more viable by the time the system rolls around, whether that's as early as 2027 or as late as 2029.
