How to Watch Grammys 2026 and Live From E! Red Carpet
The stars may be looking back on 2016, but 2006 will forever be iconic.
Specifically the 2006 Grammys. That year’s ceremony is hard to forget considering its electric start—for the opening performance, Madonna took to the stage with Gorillaz and De La Soul, performing a high-energy mashup of “Feel Good Inc.” and “Hung Up.”
The host-less ceremony was chock-full of memorable moments, including Mariah Carey’s spellbinding performance of “We Belong Together.” The “Songbird Supreme” was feeling all the emotions after taking home three golden gramophones, including one for Best Contemporary R&B Album.
However, it’s hard to believe anybody had a better night than U2. The Irish rock band—whose members include Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.—won all five categories they were nominated for, including Album of the Year for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. The group certainly blew audiences away with an explosive performance of their hit song “Vertigo.”
With celebrities like Paula Abdul, Fergie and Kanye West, the ceremony was packed with peak mid-aughts fashion.
Pregnant with her and then-husband Gavin Rossdale’s first child Kingston, Gwen Stefani stepped out in style, wearing a flowing earth-toned dress. Beyoncé and her fellow Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams also looked like a million bills, bills, bills in their silver and gold gowns while presenting Song of the Year.

The star-studded affair marked some major milestones for Grammy newcomer Kelly Clarkson, who picked up her first two Grammys including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Since U Been Gone.” John Legend clinched his first three Grammys that night, including Best New Artist. Legend also gave his first Grammys performance alongside Ciara, Maroon 5 and more artists in a tribute to Sly and the Family Stone, which featured the original members of the funk band.
Many more notable musicians joined forces throughout the night, including Bruce Springsteen and Sam Moore. At the end of the ceremony, the pair paid a tribute to the sounds of New Orleans in remembrance of the destruction of the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina just months prior. Singing “In the Midnight Hour” with New Orleans natives like Irma Thomas, the performance was also a tribute to soul artist Wilson Pickett, who died in January 2006.
