Prime Video is playing Dirty with a new original drama out of the UK. Oscar-nominated writer Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies) is behind the crime thriller, which is billed as a provocative take on a British police drama.
Dirty will follow a trainee detective, Eva Bennett. She returns to Manchester and joins a homicide investigation run by her fearsome and estranged mother, who happens to be a legendary and high-ranking officer. As they navigate their complicated relationship and long-buried truths resurface, Eva starts to uncover her mother’s crimes, forcing her to make a choice between justice and blood.
The setup means two big female lead roles are up for grabs. No casting news yet, but expect that soon as production starts in September. Charman’s Binocular label is making the series in association with Amazon MGM Studios. Binocular’s Foz Allan exec produces.
Dirty will delve deep into themes of family loyalty and tee up an intricate game of cat-and-mouse between mother and daughter. “I love the power and the volatility of these two women,” said its writer and creator Charman. “There are no limits on what either of them is capable of, which makes the potential of every scene explosive. Nicole and the entire team at Amazon understood the show instantly — they’re deeply passionate about the blend of character-driven drama and relentless propulsion.”
The show is the first UK greenlight from Nicole Clemens, the former Paramount exec who signed on as Vice President of International Originals Amazon MGM Studios last year. “Having long admired Matt’s exceptional work, I am thrilled we are collaborating with him on this remarkable project,” she said. “Centered on two extraordinarily powerful women, it delivers the bold, character-driven storytelling.”
