Prime Video's atypical World War II thriller The Tank is racking up massive viewership on the streaming service. The hit German war movie has been at the top of the streamer's list of most-watched movies for over three weeks, a rare feat on the international service, which releases new movies weekly. Since being added on January 2, The Tank has quickly climbed to the top spot and shows no signs of slowing down. It's easy to see why the gritty film is popular with subscribers, given its unique approach to portraying the infamous war.

The Tank follows a crew of five men inside a German Tiger tank sent on a mission. Movies focusing on the German side of the story are rare and probably for good reason, but The Tank takes a different avenue. Instead of glorifying German might, it uncovers a dreadful chain of events that leads soldiers to question their place in the war. David Schütter stars as Lieutenant Philip Gerkins of the Nazi regime, who, after witnessing the devastation caused by the war, begins to question what they have been told for a long time. However, as a soldier, Gerkins does not have the luxury of issuing his own orders, leaving him in a precarious position. Other cast members include Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Sebastian Urzendowsky, Yoran Leicher, Tilman Strauß, and André M. Hennicke.

The Tank was directed by German director Dennis Gansel from a script he co-wrote with Colin Teevan. Gansel is no stranger to making atypical movies, gaining popularity with the 2004 anti-Nazi film, Before the Fall. He has directed movies like The Fourth State, The Wave, Berlin, I Love You, Mechanic: Resurrection, and the upcoming sci-fi thriller Prototype. The Tank was the first German Prime Video movie to have a theatrical release before streaming. It features a wild ending that demands a rewatch, which might partly explain the streaming dominance.

The streamer is seeing considerable success with action thrillers. Following its underwhelming theatrical run, John Wick's spinoff Ballerina is drawing more attention on streaming, coming in second. Dave Bautista's hit action thriller remains a favorite, as do other movies like Kerry Washington and Omar Sy's Shadow Force, Jason Statham's A Working Man, Michelle Monaghan and Jason Clarke's Black Site, and John Bernthal and Ben Affleck's The Accountant 2. Apart from thrillers, comedy Splitsville and romances It Ends with Us, and Our Fault also appear on the chart.

Stream The Tank on Prime Video and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
