Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson’s new sci-fi thriller is now playing in theaters everywhere, but the film is underperforming big time at the box office. Mercy opened with just over $20 million at the global box office this weekend, with around $11 million coming from both domestic and international earnings. The film was up against it from the start, earning poor scores of 21% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. However, it’s redeeming itself in the eyes of some fans despite its woeful reviews and box office performance. Mercy has pulled off the unthinkable, earning a respectable 82% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

Amazon MGM reportedly spent around $60 million on the making of Mercy, which leaves the film with a break-even point of around $120 million. Studios usually split box office revenue with movie theaters 50/50, and when also factoring in marketing, this usually leaves a film’s break-even point at roughly double its production budget. Mercy follows a police officer (Pratt), who is accused of killing his wife. The film is set in an alternate reality where those accused of murder must prove their innocence to an AI judge. In this case, Rebecca Ferguson plays the judge in question.

Both Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson have experience with massive action franchises, but their combined star power hasn’t been enough to get Mercy off the ground at the box office. Pratt is famous for starring in the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and he also starred in a trio of billion-dollar Jurassic World movies. Ferguson is famous for her role as Ilsa in the Mission: Impossible movies, and she even headlined several critically acclaimed Dune films for Denis Villeneuve.

Is ‘Mercy’ on Streaming?

Mercy is not currently available to watch at home — right now, the only way to watch the film is by going to see it in movie theaters. However, with it underperforming at the box office and new arrivals coming to provide more competition, Amazon could opt to make the film available to watch at home sooner than planned. Mercy may not even have a run on VOD platforms, and with it being an Amazon exclusive, it may just begin streaming on Prime Video instead of going up for rent on the same platform. It could also begin streaming on MGM+ before Prime Video.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson’s new sci-fi thriller.
