After one adaptation and ahead of another, Russell Crowe's Robin Hood movie is finally coming to HBO Max at the perfect time. The legendary heroic outlaw was originally depicted in English folklore and has been adapted into countless films and television series going back to the early 1900s, though one of the biggest adaptations in recent years has been the 2010 film, which was directed by Ridley Scott and stars Russell Crowe in the lead role.

Now, Robin Hood (2010) is coming to HBO Max on February 1, which is a perfect time since the new Robin Hood series on MGM+ just ended its first season on December 28 and A24's The Death of Robin Hood movie starring Hugh Jackman is releasing later this year.

The Death of Robin Hood is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One) and also stars Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. The MGM+ series stars Sean Bean and Connie Nielsen, among others. While the MGM+ series is more of a straightforward retelling, The Death of Robin Hood will be a darker adaptation.

Directed by Ridley Scott, with a script written by Oscar winner Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential), Robin Hood is set in 12th century England and stars Russell Crowe as Robin Longstride who, along with his band of outlaws, challenges corruption in a rural village and spark a rebellion against the crown that ultimately reshapes the balance of power in the world.

The film's star-studded cast also includes Cate Blanchett as Marian Loxley, William Hurt as William Marshal, Mark Addy as Friar Tuck, Oscar Isaac as Prince John, Danny Huston as King Richard, Kevin Durand as Little John, Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet, Matthew Macfadyen as Sheriff of Nottingham, Eileen Atkins as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Alan Doyle as Allan A'Dayle, and Léa Seydoux as Isabella of Angoulême.

At the time of its release, Robin Hood received mixed reviews, resulting in a 43% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics claiming that Ridley Scott's reimagining of the well-worn story delivers strong performances and several intense action scenes, but lacks the sense of adventure that originally turned Robin Hood into a legend.

The movie has a 58% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Robin Hood made a sizable $322 million worldwide, it was deemed a box-office disappointment because of its big $155–237 million budget. Because of how much it cost, the movie had to make about $387.5–592.5 million to turn a profit and be considered a financial success.

However, 16 years later, Robin Hood is sure to attract a huge audience streaming on HBO Max, considering the presence of big names like Russell Crowe, Ridley Scott, and Cate Blanchett – and the continued popularity of the Robin Hood legend itself.
