Britta DeVore is a Senior Author for Collider who has been known to dabble with Reality News as well.

Have you seen stories about 'Chucky,' 'Scream,' 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' 'The Boys,' 'Vanderpump Rules,' or any of 'The Real Housewives' franchises? That's probably a Britta DeVore-curated piece of art, and it sounds like you have great taste.

When she isn't sitting behind her laptop bringing readers her hot takes on upcoming projects or keeping the dream alive in the Senior News team, Britta can usually be found outside hiking or inside behind her drum set. She currently plays in two bands, Kid Midnight and Watergate, both based in Brooklyn. An obsessive traveler, Britta loves long road trips to the South West and has a soft spot in her heart for canyons, rivers, and forests.

She also has a tiny cat named Athena that she loves more than anything else in the world and is always happy for new brewery recs.

Last week, history was made when Ryan Coogler’s Sinners raked in a whopping 16 Academy Award nominations — the most for any movie ever — solidifying its place in history and rushing past previous record holders: All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. Now, with the road to the Oscars laid out in front of them, subscribers are turning to their favorite streamers to screen the contenders ahead of Hollywood’s biggest night. With all eyes on Sinners, folks around the globe have been pressing play on the Warner Bros. title on its home streamer of HBO Max, where, according to FlixPatrol, it currently holds the bragging rights as being the platform’s most-watched feature around the globe.

Just to keep folks up to speed who may not have heard about Sinners’ monumental moment, the drama-heavy horror film grabbed nods in categories such as cinematography, visual effects, sound, production design, score, original song, makeup and hairstyling, song, editing, casting, and costume design. Additionally, it’s up for Best Picture, and several of its stars — Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, and Wunmi Mosaku — are in the running for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

Horror fans know that the blanket genre term for movies like Sinners can put it in a dicey situation, especially by how it’s received during award season. But brushing off movies with supernatural or demonic entities, things that go bump in the night, and the like can be a massive mistake, especially considering just how deep the themes of such films can be. In the case of Sinners, the story is one that’s much bigger than vampires, as it delves into the emotional bonds between family members and lovers, while also taking on a difficult — but important — time in the history of the United States.

Horror’s Award Season Rise

Sinners isn’t the only genre flick up for numerous trophies at this year’s Academy Award festivities. It’s in terrific company, with Amy Madigan of Zach Cregger’s Weapons receiving a nod, in addition to Emilie Blichfeldt’s The Ugly Stepsister being recognized for makeup and hairstyling, and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein also bagging a handful of nominations (although we’d consider the monster maestro’s latest movie to be more in the realm of dark drama than straight away horror).

Be an informed Oscars viewer by heading over to HBO Max and joining the rest of the globe by streaming Sinners.
