Taron Egerton's Smoke mostly closed things out by the end of its season 1 run, but star Hannah Emily Anderson is ready for another go.
Inspired by the podcast Firebug and developed by acclaimed author/screenwriter Dennis Lehane, the Apple TV series centered on Egerton's arson investigator Dave Gudsen and Jurnee Smollett's Detective Michelle Calderone as they're tasked to investigate a string of arsons carried out by one figure in the Pacific Northwest. As their personal lives become more tense, it's ultimately discovered that Dave is the serial arsonist, with Michelle narrowly arresting him during a heated fight.
Prior to its premiere, Lehane indicated plans for three seasons for Smoke, which have yet to officially materialize, and in an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for her new film Return to Silent Hill, Hannah Emily Anderson offered an uncertain update for the Apple TV thriller. The star began by expressing she "would love to go back" for more of the series, praising it as being "a dream to work on that project" with Lehane and Egerton.
However, Anderson also admitted that "I haven't heard anything" regarding a potential Smoke season 2. Going on to opine that the "first season stands alone really well," she remains equally open to leaving the show where it is as coming back for more, and recalling being gripped by each script she'd receive for the series:
It was just an incredible process all around. I don't know whether or not to keep the hope alive, but even if it doesn't go again, I feel like the first season really stands alone really well. So we'll see. But I'm really glad, thank you for watching. I'm so proud of that show. When I was reading the scripts, I was tearing through them and I also was kind of blown away by the ending.
Anderson starred in Smoke season 1 as Ashley, Dave's third wife who splits her time between her job as a librarian and raising her teenage son, Emmett, from a previous marriage. After starting the Apple TV series on a happier note, tensions notably escalate between the pair, particularly as Dave continues committing more arsons and Emmett continues to lash out against Egerton's character.
This ultimately builds to Smoke season 1's ending, in which Michelle successfully arrests Dave and seemingly gets away with pinning the arson she commits to cover up killing Rafe Spall's Captain Steven Burke. During a tense interrogation scene, Dave has a vision of Ashley and Emmett going on with their lives and boxing up his stuff, seemingly closing the door on Anderson and Luke Roessler's potential returns.

Apple TV's 9-Part Thriller Starring Taron Egerton Is One Of 2025's Most Underrated Shows
An arson investigation takes a dark turn in Apple TV's must-see series, a crime thriller that keeps viewers guessing until its shocking twist.
However, with Lehane having previously teased a three-season plan for the show, there are other ways for Ashley and Emmett to return with Smoke. Whether visiting Dave in prison per his request, or being called to be involved in a trial should he try and reverse his charges and put Michelle behind bars, Anderson and Roessler could appear in an effort to offer further insight into Dave's deteriorating mental state and why they were actually antagonistic to the unreliable narrator.
Ultimately, Anderson's potential Smoke season 2 return will come down to whether Apple TV decides to renew the series, and the chances are not looking good at this point. It's been five months since season 1 ended, and the streamer is typically quick to announce renewal orders for shows it wants to continue. Additionally, with Lehane, Egerton and Apple TV having a better record with miniseries than ongoing shows after the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Black Bird, the group might have all agreed Dave's journey is done.
