During an interview at Sundance Film Festival with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff while promoting Saccharine, series star Madeleine Madden opened up about the emotional toll of saying goodbye to the show before its story could be fully told.
Nemiroff acknowledged the heartbreak felt by fans and cast alike, noting how abruptly the series came to an end despite years of investment from viewers who had followed the story across multiple seasons. Madden, who portrayed Egwene al’Vere, didn’t shy away from how difficult it’s been to find closure after dedicating so much time and care to a character whose journey was far from complete. While Madden made it clear that she understands how television production works, she emphasized that the loss still stings — not only for those who worked on the show, but for longtime fans of the books and newcomers who had embraced the series along the way.
“We Were Only Just Getting Started,” Madden Says
“Unfortunately, I don’t think so,” Madden said when asked whether she’s been able to find closure since the show’s ending. “I feel like we still had a lot more to tell. I feel like the fans who have been lifelong fans of the book and new fans who have come into loving the series were really excited to see what was going to happen to these beloved characters.” Madden added that the cast and creative team felt they were just beginning to explore the deeper arcs of the story. “These characters are so brilliant, and they still have so much of an incredible arc to tell. We were only just getting started, so it was pretty devastating, I think, for a lot of the people working on it, and for our fans as well.”
Despite the disappointment, Madden shared that the passionate response from fans has been one of the most meaningful parts of her experience on the show. As Nemiroff pointed out, the outpouring of support has been loud and heartfelt, and for Madden, that connection has helped soften the blow. “That has been one of the highlights of doing that job,” she said, “Having the interaction with people that this story and these characters have meant so much to.”
