Today is a great day for Star Wars fans, who have been treated to the first trailer for the next Star Wars animated series. Disney has released the first official trailer for Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, the animated series coming to Disney+ soon. The official Star Wars X account confirmed yesterday that the trailer was incoming. It was announced last April at Star Wars Celebration that a new show featuring Darth Maul was in the works, but updates on the project have been few and far between since. Sam Witwer is also returning to voice Darth Maul in the animated series, which will show the Sith lord taking a Twi’lek apprentice and training her in the ways of the Dark Side.
Darth Maul first appeared in live-action over 25 years ago in Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, but after killing Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), he fell in battle to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). Audiences later learn that Darth Maul survived being cut in half and falling to what seemed like his death when he reappeared in The Clone Wars, the hit animated series. Maul rebuilt his lower half with robotics but still retained much of the sinister Sith power he learned under Darth Sidious. He also briefly appeared in live-action in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Star Wars has developed something of a history of announcing projects that never see the light of day, so it’s refreshing to see something that was announced less than a year ago make it to the small screen. The studio is also hard at work promoting The Mandalorian and Grogu, the first live-action feature film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
Sam Witwer Voices Another Famous Star Wars Character
Sam Witwer has earned acclaim for his role as Darth Maul in animated shows like The Clone Wars and Rebels, but he also voiced another iconic Star Wars character who has yet to appear in live-action. Witwer is famous for voicing Starkiller, the secret apprentice of Darth Vader, in both Star Wars Force Unleashed games. Fans have been waiting for years to see Starkiller brought into live-action, and considering Witwer also did the motion capture work for the character, he would be the perfect person to potentially play him in a project.
