Just this afternoon, Disney+ released the first official trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord, the new animated Disney+ series that will be released on April 6. The show was previously announced at Star Wars Celebration last April, and now it will make its debut almost exactly one year later. In addition to the first trailer, Star Wars also released more information about the series, confirming that Wagner Moura has been cast as Brander Lawson. Moura is fresh off earning his first Oscar nomination for his performance in The Secret Agent. He’s also famous for voicing Woof in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

The Secret Agent has become Moura’s most famous work, which isn’t surprising considering the film has a chance to win an Oscar, but he’s been in quite a few big projects lately. Just last year, he starred opposite Brian Tyree Henry in Dope Thief, the Apple TV original series directed and produced by Ridley Scott. He also had a large role in Civil War, Alex Garland’s 2024 visceral movie that went on to become one of A24’s biggest box office hits ever. He can even be seen as Laszlo Sosa in The Gray Man, the 2022 Netflix original movie starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans.

The trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord opens with the Sith lord narrating over violent action, promising to show someone the galaxy for what it truly is. We later learn that he’s talking to his new Twi’lek apprentice, who appears later in the trailer. He promises his new apprentice a better life, saying that Force users have been made to survive, but not live. Together, the duo is poised to become a serious problem for Lawson (Moura) and anyone else who stands in their way.

Darth Maul Has Tried To Take an Apprentice Before

In Star Wars Rebels, Darth Maul finds himself working with Ezra Bridger, but it isn’t until the interference of Ahsoka that Ezra realizes Darth Maul isn’t the master he made himself out to be. Ahsoka had more than her fair share of battles against Maul in The Clone Wars, so she’s able to see right through the lies he’s telling Ezra. Maul: Shadow Lord will show Maul’s first real apprentice, one he can mold and guide down the same path of darkness he learned from Darth Sidious.

Check out the official trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord above and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the show before it hits Disney+.
