Not every game on Steam has to be complex or elaborate to hook players and keep them going back for more, and sometimes it's the most simple games that end up being the most addictive. One new free game on Steam might not seem like much, but once you start playing, you'll have a hard time putting it down.
Steam has recently listed a new strategy game called War of Dots that's entirely free to play, has 88% positive user reviews, and comes highly recommended among players despite its simple and somewhat crude design. War of Dots is described as a "minimalist" RTS game (real-time strategy game) with highly addictive gameplay and PvP multiplayer.

While it doesn't look like much, players who have spent time in War of Dots have a hard time putting it down, calling gameplay "easy to learn, but hard to master." War of Dots is founded on a simple and minimalistic design where players engage in real-time battles against warring troops represented by dots on a range of maps.
The entire game is based on refining strategy elements to their most simple forms. For example, players have just two types of troops to choose from, heavy and light, while cities function by producing new units and supplying existing ones, and capturing cities gives players an economic advantage.
That's pretty much all you need to know to get started, but don't expect a relaxing experience, as matches can be surprisingly difficult and the basic mechanics take real strategizing to master. That said, War of Dots includes a casual mode and map creation if you are looking for something more laid back, but features a ranked PvP mode for hardcore players.
War Of Dots Is Simple But Effective
It's Like Civilization For Dummies
If you are a fan of Civilization-style RTS games or the Sid Meier's Civilization franchise itself, War of Dots is basically a super dumbed-down version of Civ that removes all the over-complicated grand-strategy elements from the equation. While there's nothing grand about this strategy game, it certainly requires mastery of the game's rudimentary mechanics.
War of Dots is currently available completely free of charge on Steam, and it comes highly recommended among players despite some users reporting performance issues and bugs. Further, it doesn't appear to be optimized for Steam Deck, though it's ripe for Steam Deck support and would be ideal on the handheld. Regardless, War of Dots is definitely worth checking out if you're a strategy game fan looking for something that won't break the bank.
