Avengers: Endgame missed a major opportunity when it sent Steve Rogers into the past with the Infinity Stones, and now that can finally be rectified in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite Endgame being laid out as a definitive ending to Captain America's MCU story, it's now a certainty that the Phase 3 film was, in fact, not the final act for the Star Spangled Avenger.
Instead, Chris Evans will be back as Steve Rogers in Phase 6. And not only that, but it looks suspiciously like he's the main character of Avengers: Doomsday. Obviously, this comes with all sorts of storytelling potential for his character and his role in the fight against Doctor Doom. One such option worth exploring relates to the things that happened in the MCU timeline but wasn't shown.
Steve Rogers Gave The Soul Stone Back To Red Skull
Steve Rogers returned all six Infinity Stones to their previous places before they were retrieved by the time-traveling Avengers, meaning that Cap must have enjoyed an off-screen encounter with his original nemesis - Red Skull from Captain America: First Avenger. Red Skull was revealed in Infinity War to be on the planet known as Vormir, where he acted as the caretaker of the Soul Stone.
This meeting would have been a fascinating moment to show in Avengers: Endgame, if for no other reason than to see Steve's reaction to finding out about Red Skull's survival and current role in the MCU as the guardian of the Soul Stone. Red Skull may feel detached from his former life, but it's worth wondering if seeing Captain America would register some emotions he likely hasn't experienced in decades.
Unfortunately, it was ultimately decided that Captain America's reunion with Red Skull wasn't important enough to warrant a scene in Avengers: Endgame. Afterward, it was easy to presume that this would remain one of those moments that stay in the imagination of the viewer, but Doomsday revisiting Steve's life after going back in time puts this reunion back on the table.
How Avengers: Doomsday Can Include Red Skull
Were Ross Marquand - who replaced Hugo Weaving in Infinity War and Endgame as Red Skull - to reprise his role in Doomsday, Marvel could easily work him into the narrative, devoting some screen time in the early portion of the film to Steve Rogers' efforts to return the Infinity Stones to their proper places. This could then segue into Steve's life as a family man.
Another way Marvel could use Red Skull is by having him join forces with Doctor Doom. Like Captain America, he could use time travel to find him. Red Skull and Doctor Doom have a history of partnerships in Marvel Comics that could be drawn upon to fuel an epic, evil alliance of MCU supervillains in Avengers: Doomsday, thus justifying the need for so many heroes to appear.
