Netflix will soon be the home of one of Taylor Sheridan's best releases, a Western that impacted the genre on a large scale. Sheridan has become one of the most prolific creators in Hollywood. He has tapped into different genres, creating some of the best crime thriller series around, such as Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness, but his bread and butter is another genre.
Sheridan's Yellowstone franchise revolutionized Westerns. So far, three series have come and gone in that universe, with more Western TV shows from Sheridan in different stages of development, some within the Yellowstone franchise, and some outside of it. Now, a Western movie from Sheridan that predates Yellowstone is coming to Netflix, and it revitalized the genre ten years ago.
Taylor Sheridan's Hell or High Water will be released on Netflix in the United States on February 1. The movie was written by the Yellowstone creator, with David Mackenzie attached as its director. Hell or High Water is a two-hander, starring Chris Pine as Toby Howard and Ben Foster as Tanner Howard, two brothers hunted by Jeff Bridges' Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton for robbing banks.
At the worldwide box office, Hell or High Water might not have been an absurd hit, but the Western was successful, becoming the highest-grossing independent movie of 2016 with $37.9 million. Based on a reported budget of $12 million, the film needed to finish its theatrical run between $24 million and $30 million to break even, which it did.
Aside from working commercially, Hell or High Water was also a critically acclaimed film, something that Sheridan's projects have become known for over the years. The Western movie boasts a near-perfect critics' score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. While a little lower, the movie also landed well with the audience, as Sheridan's Western masterpiece has an 89% audience score.
